11 week old cough - help!

My 11 week old has had a cough for about 4 weeks now.

She is full of mucus all the time and it makes her cough and then vomit - there is often mucus in the vomit.

Some days she will go all day without coughing others she will cough/vomit 3-4 times in the day. She has also started coughing in her sleep at night.

At 7 weeks the GP wouldn’t see her because of Covid so I took her to A&E (she was in NICU for a week at birth so I’m extra cautious and it looked like she wasn’t breathing when coughing) they said they thought it was the start of bronchiolitis. I explained this to the GP afterwards who prescribed antibiotics.

She had a full check up with her jabs at 9 weeks. The GP said everything is clear. Her lungs etc sounded clear and she is just full of mucus which is causing the coughing. Her weight gain is fine and he had no concerns.

BUT the cough is still there Confused I know if I phone the GP they won’t see her (and probably just give me more antibiotics over the phone) so what can I do? Has anyone had a baby with a persistent cough at this age? What was it? Did they just grow out of it?

No smokers, pets etc in the house or near her at any times.

She needs to be seen, her lungs need checking and she needs a full examination. Push the GP, there is no reason to not see her now as it clearly isnt Covid having lasted this long

Thanks for the reply.

Her lungs have been checked 3 times:

Once at birth (she was on oxygen as retained mucus from section) she had a full x ray scan and all clear.

Once at 7 weeks when I took her to A&E - no x-ray they listened with the stethoscope.

Once at 9 weeks when she had a full check up with the GP.

Apart from a slight rattle at 7 weeks they have been clear each time.

I’ve really tried my best to push the GP before but they are only offering telephone appointments. And it’s like banging your head on a brick wall.

It's in these situations where I've found that if you scream and shout in enough directions, finally someone will hear you.

Keep on to the GP, ask to be seen. No good GP should refuse to see such a small baby in person.

Speak to your HV. Explain your concerns, I've had situations previously where a GP has tried to fob me off, I've spoken to a HV who has either called my GP or told me to call and say that the HV says I need a face to face appointment.

Speak to the NICU, your baby should have been under a paediatrician there. They will either be able to reassure you or point you in the direction of help.

I've also found that 111 can be helpful at these times. They will take an over cautious approach with babies.

A healthy baby shouldnt be full of mucus at 9 weeks or 11 weeks. Its 4 weeks since her lungs were last checked, they meed checking again. If her lungs are clear, then it needs progressing to identify other causes. There are nasty things out there that generate lots of mucus in a little baby and they need ruling out. Have you tried 111 and tell them the GP wont see her. You really need to get pushy

Thanks for the replies. I will phone the GP first thing tomorrow morning. We’re going to try and capture it on video tonight if she has another session.

It’s so fucking stressful I could honestly cry. I have tried being pushy but have been told ‘Covid’ none stop, that’s why I took her to A&E at 7 weeks. If the GP refuses I will take her back to A&E.

She’s a happy baby otherwise and meeting all her milestones etc. But there is a constant fear that something is wrong.

I agree that her lungs need to be checked again, but my DD was full of mucus, blocked nose etc with her reflux.. if her lungs are clear that could be a possibility?

How's DD doing OP?
