Best treatment for dribble rash?

My poor 14 month old’s chin is very red and rough, with a few spots on his cheek. I let it be as it wasn’t bothering him but the past few days I’ve been putting coconut oil on him to act as a barrier. It helped it a lot overnight, but then it’s back to red again.

Any recommendations on natural (ish) products I can use for him?

Also, I’m guessing this isn’t something that could leave scarring? FTM here!

I've had success with aloe Vera gel as quite drying.

It's horrid isn't it. Was bad here but no scars. Most recent worry is now licking lips and making them sore!

WireFan · 17/04/2021 21:20

Vaseline, just a slick. And decent dribble bibs e.g. Funky Giraffe that dont soak through and that you change often.

My DS has something similar, and my mum recommended a product by Lyonsleaf called Calendula and Marshmallow balm. Apparently my niece and nephew call it 'Nanny's magic cream'. I've ordered some from Amazon and it arrived today, so I'll see how we get on.

Vaseline as a barrier during the day and a good beard of Sudocrem at night. Worked for us. Mine are 16 and 18 now, but they both had killer dribble rash as babies!

Canyouexplainhowthatis · 17/04/2021 21:44

Thanks all! I’ve also been recommended the Weleda calendula cream - has anyone had any experience with it?

Vaseline/ointment as a barrier but if it is open and looks a bit gross, get it checked with the GP as could need anti fungal cream to clear

RamblingRover · 18/04/2021 17:29

My DD was chest and neck were so sore while she dribbled. Keeping the area dry for dribble as much as you can, sure you’re doing this already. Vaseline as a barrier and aveeno to moisturise definitely helped. Found Sudocreme went a bit cheese like. Also had the GP look at as she started to scratch at it and make it bleed but never got infected thankfully.

Canyouexplainhowthatis · 18/04/2021 18:02

@bookish83 no, no open wound. Just a red rashand looking sore, but he doesn’t seem bothered by it.

Try the La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume! I haven't used it for this purpose but I myself have extremely sensitive skin and it heals irritation so beautifully. (I'm also 99.9% sure that it is safe for babies but obviously check)

Kimblebee19 · 19/04/2021 10:52

Echoing a pp here - I agree Vaseline during the day keep it topped up and then a really good slathering of Sudocrem at night. Poor DS had it really bad and wasn't expecting that to do it, but a few days later and it was so much better.

Canyouexplainhowthatis · 19/04/2021 11:24

Thanks everyone. I’ve been slathering Vaseline on which is helping and I’ve ordered a few others bits to try for overnight!

Yes to Weleda . Their Weather Protection Cream is a miracle worker on any sort of sore, chapped skin . I have used it on my dds cheeks and when they have had that chapping around lips in cold wet weather.

idontlikealdi · 19/04/2021 11:31

tamanu balm from Tropic. No I don't sell it! You can buy direct online without having to get involved in any MLM shit.

Caspianberg · 19/04/2021 11:32

The weleda range is great. It’s pricey, but a small tube lasts ages.
We use the wind and weather on his face when it was freezing outside and it really helped not getting that red cheek rash from cold.
We also have the weleda nappy cream. He very really needs it, but it he does we put on once or twice and it’s clear by morning.

Amrythings · 19/04/2021 11:57

I used Eucerin Aquaphor as a barrier and the blue Aveeno lotion as a moisturizer and that kept it reasonably at bay. Hoping this one is a bit less dribbly, DS was absolutely shocking.

FurryGiraffe · 19/04/2021 11:57

Another vote for vaseline and funky giraffe bibs. I also found Lansinoh was great for dribble rash and sore lips in cold weather (I had a tube left over!)

Fuckitaaaallllll · 19/04/2021 13:59

Child's farm nappy rash cream worked a treat on my LOs milk and sweat rash under their chin.

De88 · 21/04/2021 01:15

Any lanolin, most widely known Lansinoh. Heals everything!

FudgeSundae · 21/04/2021 20:41

Child’s farm baby fragrance free moisturiser. 4-5 times a day.

DenisetheMenace · 21/04/2021 20:43

We used sudocrem (the cream in the tube, not the globby stuff in the grey pot that you put on bums) for most everything. Usually worked.

Mamabear04 · 21/04/2021 22:16

Lanolin nipple cream! (The purple one) It works so unbelievably well - doesn't rub off with drool and is good for any skin type/doesn't matter if they eat it

2020N · 22/04/2021 03:19

@Canyouexplainhowthatis Is it definitely dribble rash? My baby had a red rash on her chin that I thought was dribble rash (health visitor suggested using vasoline before feeds to act as a protective barrier) but then the rash spread to her cheeks and upper chest and it turned out to be baby eczema instead - it looked extremely similar! Baby aveeno sorted it out quickly. Just thought I’d mention incase it helps.

Canyouexplainhowthatis · 22/04/2021 06:43

Thanks everyone. Just an update.

I’ve been using Weleda baby mallow face cream once a day, and then using Balmonds skin salvation at night on his chin. Vaseline as a barrier during the day.

It’s made a big difference :)

Glad to hear you have found something that’s helping so quickly.

Sometime sits just a case of trial and error to see what works. Once it’s cleared up you will probably fine you can reduce needing to use all three or every other day.
Also dribble seems to come and go with teething, so you might get some respite soon
