When did your kids stop watching cartoons?

I have an 8yo DS, we live abroad so main access to English-speaking TV is through Netflix. His age setting is PG, the next one up is 12. But this gives a diet of almost 100% cartoons, they are such rubbish. I'd really like him to watch films with real people and real dialogue.

Also he's watching waaay too much TV (because of the parental control time limits on his tablet) but Netflix doesn't offer any way to control that. Anyway there doesn't seem to be anything to stop him logging on to someone else's account. He tries this on our computers and PS4 sometimes, but so far hasn't thought to do it on Netflix.

I haven't really explored what choices he has in the 12 age range, but it seems a big jump from 8/PG to 12.

Some of them haven't, even as adults!

Anime is chill these days.

My DH still watches them (on his own) and he is 44!

DH’s favourite is the Simpsons. He also loves Family Guy. Cartoons aren’t always for kids.

If the age classification is the same as films sometimes the difference is just a film or programme having a couple of minor swear words in (like 'crap' or 'shit'), minor sexual references (that would probably go over the head of most 8 year olds) or scenes of characters smoking cigarettes (not relevant to the plot but often just because the film was made years ago when smoking was more 'normal'). There is often very little difference between a PG and a 12. It depends what it is.

Also can you get BBC children's dramas (or similar) on Netflix? Or can you access BBC iPlayer. CBBC (the BBC channel for 6 - 12 year olds) is full of quality made dramas.

Rather than just cartoons I mean.

I think iPlayer and ITV equivalent only work in the UK. Maybe I need to explore VPN...

Have you tried programmes like the Odd Squad on Netflix? Ds2 is 8 and watches a mix of thins.

I still like some cartoons now as an adult 🤷

Fair enough if you think he's watching too much TV but as long as it's not too adult for him I wouldn't worry too much about what he watches on there.

Try Miraculous Ladybug and Cat noir! - 7 year old DS and 12 year old DD can't get enough! It's kid friendly and also quite entertaining for adults!

Avatar, the Last Airbender is worth a watch. The cartoon series in preference to the live action movie, my two say (now 11 and 13).
