Some questions for anyone who has successfully potty trained a 2.5 year old girl

Hi everyone

I know there’s loads of different ways to train, different types of potty, etc etc. I’m trying to decide what to do for my DD who is nearly 2 and a half so I was hoping people who have had success at this age might be able to share what worked for them.

What method did you use? I’m tempted by going for it over 3 days but not sure I can handle all the likely cleaning, I have a bad back/neck/shoulders.

Did you bother with one of the fancy potties like the ones that look like actual toilets, or just get a cheap and cheerful one? Or go straight to the toilet with an insert thing?

Training pants or straight to normal pants?

How, but how how how, do you get them to stay still after a successful wee or poo for wipeage?!?

Any help or tips would be so appreciated.

I waited until she actually showed an interest in potty training. She picked it up in a few days. She was 2 years 8 months. My son was nearly 4 as he just didn’t get it when I’d tried earlier. He was mostly dry, but had more accidents and still (5) gets caught short when he is playing.
I just prompted them loads in the early days and really praised them when they did it.

2.5 I’d go for toilet with toddler seat and a portable potty for out and about.

Both of mine thought pull ups were nappies so a few days naked from waist down and then big girl pants.

Definitely when she’s interested... be child led and it will be faster and pain free.

With my daughter I also focused on making sure she practiced pulling up her knickers and leggings/tights so they weren’t skew wiff. :)

Literally a plain white £1 potty worked for us. We added a sticker to it every time she used it !

We didn't have a downstairs toilet, so used a potty downstairs otherwise she would never have made it in time.

Assuming she's not a giant, you'll need a decent size step for her to get up, unless you want to lift her each time or risk her never being properly over the toilet.

Leave a potty around, just wait for her to announce she's done with nappies. No point trying to force it, you'll get nowhere.

I followed the "oh crap!" method which is basically take thr nappy off, show them the potty, explain that's where wee and poo go then watch them like a hawk for a wee dance, stick em on and keep on going. It's intense but you don't need pull ups or anything fancy.

I followed the book “oh crap potty training” with both mine, girl got it second time around at 2.5, son was nearer 4 before I even tried as he didn’t seem ready. We do have integrated child toilet seats, much easier than the removable ones, but obviously more expensive. For the baby bjorn potty a bit more money but easier to clean and they seem to be in a better position on them when they’re doing a poo rather than the cheaper ones. I also use a potette for out and about, they’re brilliant, you put a bag on and just tie it up and throw it in the bin, and can also use them as an insert for toilet seats. My 6 year old still uses it on the toilet when we’re on holiday.

Thanks everyone. I think she is ready, nursery agree and she apparently shows loads of interest when the bigger kids ask to use the potty when she’s there. Also she often puts cushions on the floor and sits on them like a potty and says stuff like ‘I do wees on potty’ while she’s doing it.

I will definitely back off and try again in a few months if she’s resistant at all or it doesn’t work out as I get that she might want to do it but physically be unable, but I am hopeful.

Dn was just under 2 I think. I got her a princess potty book took her to get nice pants and then bought loads of smarties and chocolate buttons and said she could have 2 for every poo and one for every wee. She was fully dry within 2 weeks.

But she was talking by then, could tell me when she was about to poo (she wanted me to hold her hand when she did), and loved the toilet. I got her a nice chair seat over the toilet and one of those lap desks so she could scribble while on the toilet.

We did the bulk of it over 4 days, she was in nursery from day 5 and pretty reliable, although she did start soiling herself at nursery then for about two weeks. We used an Ikea potty. She had a few accidents on day 2 when we first introduced trousers, she didn't seem to realise she had to remove them to wee, but soon caught on. We didn't put her in underwear for about two weeks or so. We never used training pants. We vaguely followed the 'Oh Crap' book. Didn't usually have a problem with her staying still to wipe after using the potty and the odd time if she was getting tetchy I would just block her from leaving with my body and keep hold of her with one arm if I had to.
