When did your DC start using an open cup?

My DS currently uses one of these cups for his water (is it a sippy cup?)

He’s also about to switch from formula to cows milk, so I’ll be doing away with the bottles entirely and just using these.

My question is, what age did your DC drop bottles completely and also - when did they go from a cup like the one above to a proper open cup? I think if I gave DS an open cup he’d spill it all over himself!

Just checking that I’m on the right track basically...

We've always used an open cup for water from 6 months and introduced cows milks at 12 months (he was breastfed so we did this at the start of trying to wean). He's never had a problem drinking from it and could use it independently from about 10 months. We do tend to take it away quickly when he's finished so he doesn't decide to have a pour and a play after a drink though!
He's never had a sippy cup and the few times we've tried him with one he hasn't had a clue what to do with it so I really think they just get used to whatever they're given!

By himself? 9 mo, but we were helping him use it from 5 mo

Get him a doidy cup! They're brilliant, good size for little hands and angled so they can see the water coming at them. My toddler had one from 6 months and she much preferred it to a sippy cup. Takes a little while (and a lot of spills) to get used to but definitely worth it.

Oh dear, so DS is a bit behind then. Sounds like I should have started him on an open cup a while back!

Should have said my daughter had one from 6 months but wasn't reliably using it without help for a good while longer than that. The open cup thing's a skill that takes a while to master!

ShinyGreenElephant · 14/04/2021 18:14

About 6m but she was spilling it all over the show until about 10m. She doesnt drink cows milk though and I wouldnt personally give milk in an open cup until she was quite good at using it because it stinks if you spill it whereas water doesn't matter

Volcanoexplorer · 14/04/2021 18:14

Mine were really old. I couldn’t be doing with the spills. They’re now 8 and 5 and drink perfectly well from a glass. It’s not a competition so don’t worry about it.

Toottootdrivers · 14/04/2021 18:17

He's not behind at all. Posts like this will always attract the people whose children did it really young.

My DS is 18 months. At 12 months (ish) I transferred him to a munchkin cup (the ones with a lid but no spout. He's only just starting to drink from an open cup under close supervision. I wouldn't let him have it unsupervised. It would be everywhere!

MyGrassIsBrowner · 14/04/2021 18:18

My DD has just turned one. She has cows milk from her bottle and then water in a bottle that has a straw in it, took a bit for her to realise what to do but she loves it now. Don't for a second think your child is behined, they all do things at their own pace. My DD has only just started crawling confidentally but I have friends whose children started walking before 12 months.. they're all different 😊 x

RedGoldAndGreene · 14/04/2021 18:19

It's useful to have them practice with straws and open cups just in case you want to give them a drink while out and about and you don't have a sippy cup.

MsChatterbox · 14/04/2021 18:21

Honestly, my 3 year old drinks from a sports type bottle. He's perfectly capable of using a cup, and will use a cup for anything with milk. But water and squash are in the bottle. Means he can carry it round!

olderthanyouthink · 14/04/2021 18:22

I tried earlier with milk because she hated bottles and it didn't work but from 7 months with water was ok. Stopped for a while because she was annoying me with it Grin and then I guess constantly from 12 months.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 14/04/2021 18:23

Doidy cups are a good halfway house when learning to drink from an open cup. My son is 7 and still likes his!

battleaxe2000 · 14/04/2021 18:25

18m ? sippy cup from 4m (when weaned), then open cup with meals from 18m ish. Beakers gone by 2.

BergamotMouse · 14/04/2021 18:29

I'm the other end of the spectrum, DS is 2.5 and still uses a sippy cup. He can use a normal cup but would spill it every few days. So until he stop knocking things to the floor he'll stick with sippy cups.

bloodywhitecat · 14/04/2021 18:29

My last little one was drinking from an open cup by 6 months (with support), he dropped bottles by the time he was 9 months and drank from a 360 cup. My current little one is a few days off his first birthday and still only taking any fluids from a bottle (not for the want of trying to get him on to a cup on my part).

MeadowHay · 14/04/2021 18:52

My DD has been able to drink out of an open cup since 6 months, but at nearly 3 we still often give her a sippy cup or straw cup and always put her milk in those. Just to contain mess as otherwise she's unpredictable, she still sometimes knocks all of her cup of water down her or decides to start pouring it on the floor or whatever.

PumpingPamela · 14/04/2021 21:32

We've been using an open cup (espresso glass) since 6 months. She's 8 months now and more water still goes down her front than in her mouth (but she only has water at mealtimes and is wearing a Bibado so it's fine). I've tried her with various sippy cups and she just won't do it (she also won't hold her own bottle like loads of her peers seem to). I really need to sort it as by one she'll need water between meals and I can't be dealing with the mess of an open cup all over the house Shock.

They're all different OP, I wouldn't stress it.

Dyra · 14/04/2021 21:41

My LO is 19 months, and can't do it by herself yet. She can if I'm controlling the glass though. We just use 360 beakers at mealtimes.

Once the summer weather starts up, and we're eating outside more, then we'll start practicing open cups. She makes enough mess with a supposedly "non-spill" cup as it is.
