Any childminders out there?

I’m due to go back to work in June.

My little one is a typical lockdown baby and hasn’t been left with anyone. I’ve started leaving her with my mum for an hour and hope to build this to a full Morning in the next few weeks.

I’m so nervous about leaving her. She’ll be 11 months old and doesn’t nap unless I’m holding her or in her buggy.

I’m just so worried that she won’t nap or cope with the separation and cry all day.

Just wondering if there are any childminders who can put my mind at rest or tell me the harsh reality of it.

@RedWineLlps

Hiya! I’m sorry that you’re feeling nervous about going back to work, but what you’re feeling is totally normal and your little one is very lucky to have a Mummy who cares so much!

I am a childminder, and have also worked in nurseries.

She will cry. BUT! It will pass, I promise you! And she will nap and eat and all of those things. She may not do it the first time, but she will.

Children are so resourceful and able to adapt much better than us grown ups - and remember, our own kiddies tend to ‘play up’ more for us because we are their safe place. I have lost count of the number of children I’ve cared for who are held to sleep at home, but here go to sleep in the cot! It’s just different - I am not their Mum, they know they are safe, they’re very tired and the cot is comfy, so off they go! Mum could do EXACTLY the same at home....and they wouldn’t go to sleep. It is just different ❤️

I would advise you to be prepared for her to cry at drop off and then again at pick up, but please don’t think that means she has cried all day! Often, they calm down quickly but when they see Mum again, they get so overwhelmed with emotion that they can’t express in any other form, so they cry!

That is why it’s so important to pick a childminder that you can trust - so when they tell you that your child has been fine, you can confidently believe them, even if they are crying right now!

You sound like a very loving and considerate parent and I am sure your little one will do fantastically at the childminders

Also - when do you start settling in sessions? These will be a big help at putting your kind at ease!

Kind? Mind 🤦‍♀️

Thanks so much for your wonderful reply. It’s made me feel so much more at ease. I’m hoping to star the settling in sessions mid may.

I know once I see her interact with the childminder I’ll feel better.
