Calpol Plug In

Not sure if this is the right place for this post but anyway....

I have a calpol plug in and although the extremely bright neon light is annoying (and now covered in masking tape) it's useful.

I was wondering if the refill pads can be reused? Has anyone tried a few drops of albas oil on them or anything? They literally dry out after one night so it's getting a bit pricey.

Thanks in advance

I haven’t tried rescuing them, but I did only run them for 3-4 hours at the start of the night. It still smelled strongly when I went in the next morning. No annoying light and pads last 2-3 nights instead.

MummyE87 · 11/04/2021 21:36

I might give it a go. Hate throwing them away all the time!!

What brand doesn't have the light and lasts longer? I couldn't see on your post.

Oh sorry I didn’t mean I use a different brand - still the calpol one but by turning it off after a few hours you can make the pad last 2/3 nights and obviously off it has no light. No idea why they thought the light would be popular.

Home bargains used to sell the refill pads cheaper. I don’t know if they still do.

You're not supposed to use olbas oil on babies. I get two uses out of them, so long as I remember to take it out during the day! They are expensive but so effective.

ladymalfoy45 · 12/04/2021 19:01

I agree with @whatswithtodaytoday. We buy refills from Amazon .
You might try Olbas Oil for Infants. 3+ months if you want to recycle.
I put a blend of oils for Calm and Anxiety on the pads and put them inside my pillow case.
Also put scent on them and shove them in with my underwear and bedding.

SeaTurtles92 · 12/04/2021 19:01

You shouldn't place anything else on the calpol plug refill it could be dangerous and even set the plug on fire.

When I have used the calpol plug in I have only ever turned it on for a couple of hours.

AliciaWhiskers · 12/04/2021 19:03

I used to use each tablet for 2 nights. It was certainly less strong smelling the second night but still seemed to work

Eileen101 · 12/04/2021 19:07

I use each pad for a few hours too. Turn it on around 5/6ish and close the door, then turn it off around 9/9.30 when I go to bed.
I tend to get two nights from each that way. I don't think you'd get much more than that out of one as they'd dry out.
I definitely wouldn't put olbas or anything on the pad as it's a fire risk. What about putting some olbas in the corner of the sheet instead? I did that when I didn't want to spend out on the pads during mat leave 1.

The nightlight is also covered in tape here too. Why did they put a nightlight on it? If I wanted a nightlight, I'd already have one. I don't need it on a thing I bring out because there's a cold.

babypinkelephant · 12/04/2021 19:13

I also read that blue light keeps baby awake so why they put a blue light on us beyond me.

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 12/04/2021 19:22

I always get the refills from home bargains, they're loads cheaper. The light drives me up the wall especially while the kids are in our room, it doesn't keep them awake but keeps me and DH up so I tend to sleep with a mask on

timeforanewnameagain · 12/04/2021 19:35

I don't know the answer but I too am baffled as to why they've put a nightlight on them it's ridiculous! And a blue one. Blue light is awful for sleep.

See also, Gro-Clock, another blue screen!

Thanks for the advice re albas oil. Didn't realise it was dangerous!!

I did pick up some lavender oil today, I may use the oil on the used pads and put it inside the pillow of the chair in his room. That way he doesn't have direct contact with it, the calpol ones actually only have lavender and camomile. I put a little snuffle baby on his chest before bed so hopefully that will help too.

The blue light is contradictory! Lavender to sleep and a blue light which as a previous poster said keeps them awake!

Also, I've had a google online for the refills and they sell them cheaper in savers too which is handy as I have one round the corner from me so will pop in tomorrow.

Thanks everyone.

I just put olbas oil on some cloth hung out of reach of child. So much cheaper and does the job.

adagio · 12/04/2021 23:22

For my now bigger kids we top up the pads with lavender and olbas oil. (Few drops if each) not quite as nice as the real ones tho!
The annoying, piercing, blue lights are duck taped.
When babies I used the real thing and usually got 2 nights out of them so long as I remember to turn off

Flyingfruit · 13/04/2021 07:34

Olbas oil on a muslin over the radiator. If the heating is on works perfectly!

lemorella · 13/04/2021 07:42

Refills are £5 in b&m which is the cheapest I could find in the shops. Got stung in Asda this week for £7 as I just couldn't deal with multiple trips.

MummyE87 · 13/04/2021 12:17

Thanks, savers were out so I'm en route to BnM!! I only left it on last night for 2 hours so I'll try it again tonight and have the new ones as backup!

We just put electrical tape over the blue light to stop it being so bright!
