What to dress baby in outside?

Daft question, I know, but...

What should I dress DS (4 weeks) in outside? I had a traumatic birth and haven't been out and about with him yet, aside from quick car journeys to hospital.

Tomorrow I've got to register him and do a few other bits, and I'm stressing about what to dress him in! He's nearly 8lbs now (he was 6lbs at his lowest point, he was poorly for a while) but still doesn't fit his full babygrows (they're very long in the leg and just swamp him for some reason!). His vests fit him (long and short sleeves), and he's got some leggings. He also has a jacket that still seems big too. No cardigans.

Up until now I didn't worry about this because everything else was so stressful, but now I'm concerned about what to dress him in! I bought so many sleepsuits thinking they'd fit him perfectly!

Could I layer him in a long sleeved vest, leggings, an extra jumper (same material/thickness as vest but without poppers), hat, blanket? Socks and booties too?

I'm aware I sound a bit mad but it's been a very stressful four weeks, and we're only just coming out of the fog...he's also having a growth spurt so sleep is sparse and I've predominantly been worrying about him crying when we're out, and now this has struck me!

Typically babies need one more layer than you are wearing. A babygro/ sleepsuit with vest under it is ok if he's wrapped in a blanket to carry him into registrar or under the blanket in a carseat as straps can not be tightened adequately under a puffy coat or snow suit. A hat helps outside but not in warm houses. Mittens or socks on his hands if we have the snow again.
Pick up a couple of hoodies next time you're at the supermarket.
Enjoy him..Spring and summer are coming
Babies can have alarmingly cold hands and feet so it's the back of the neck that should feel toasty when you check their comfort temperature.

Avoiding overheating is.more important
A cold baby will.object and tell you

Nappy and a change of clothes for him, and possibly a clean top for you helps too, on even the shortest outing

@Shouldbedoing Thank you, that's wonderful advice! I must sound crazy in my OP and I feel like I should already know all of this, so thank you for being kind! Will the extra layer plus blanket be okay while he's in the pram, too? We've got a short walk from the car to the office, and then another to somewhere else. I feel the cold terribly myself so I struggle to tell if I'm overthinking how chilly it actually is sometimes.
