Using Cloth Nappies When Out in Public

Hi girls,

This may sound like a stupid question, but I am a soon to be first time mum and first time cloth nappy user. I already have all my cloth nappies, boosters and wraps but am wondering how you deal with soiled nappies when you are out in public. Will a basic nappy bag work to store the soiled nappy until you get home? I don't really want to be walking around the town smelling of poo but neither do I want to use disposables.

Anyone have any suggestions for a strong nappy sack which will contain the odour?

Thanks
Summer

in your baby bounty packs you will get some sample nappy sacks that are amazing!! they smell divine and are very strong....they are ideal, but i just used to use any old nappy sack and pop that inside another carrier in my baby bag....another tip is to have all your napies pre-made in your baby bag....otherwise its a bit tricky being out and trying to change a nappy after all the fiddling of puting it together!!!

also i did find that the first 2 weeks or so after having baby i just used disposables while i got myself back to full health and got used to being a mummy!! and if you have stitches or a section you will hate it if you cant cope on the floor or wherever long enough to make the nappy up and change baby before they wee all over the floor etc- so i got a couple of packs to fall back on before actually starting on the cloths....

good luck!!

I´ve got a drawstring washable nappy bag that holds up to 5 nappies, never get any smells, just bung the nappy in, close it and chuck it in the change bag or under the pram. Easy peasy.

I take out my changing bag with as many nappies as I think I'll need. I have a spray bottle (make my spray with dixie drops) and washable wipes. I also have a drawstring wet nappy bag.

When I pack the changing bag I put the liners (I used paper ones at first and now use fleece) inside the nappy ready for use. After changing dd I would chuck the paper liner/poo and then put nappy and wipes in the wet nappy bag. Bag then goes back in changing bag or under pram.

Now her poo is a bit more solid so I use fleece liners and chuck the poo down the loo (if there is one) once she's changed and back in the pram. If there's no loo, I put the whole lot in the wet nappy bag.

I have 2 wet nappy bags so that if one gets poo on it or smells a bit I have a spare one to use while it's washing/drying.

sparklygothkat · 11/11/2007 18:48

I have a waterproof drawstring bag too

I have one that rolls down and closes with a popper like a canoeing drybag - never seen anyone else with one but it's very cool.

i use the ziplock style bags from tescos, they last ages before you have to chick them out. You can make up a couple with clean nappy and liner and then it is easy to pack changing bag - just but soiled one into back to take home. I guess you could give them a rinse if you need to but if you fold up dirsty nappy they seem fine.

tassisssss · 11/11/2007 19:24

the washable nappy bag that i have is rather massive (holds 5ish)

i got the same thing but smaller in M&S last Christmas for about £2 and nice choice of fabrics too.

Thanks so much everyone for your suggestions! I like the idea of a washable nappy sack to take out with us and will look for something similar in the next couple of weeks.

Ta!

I used to use normal nappy sacks (the babies r us ones were good), then got a wet bag but unfortunately found it wicked so now just use carrier bags. We seem to have a ton of small ones that are too small to be used as bin liners like we do with the others so I mainly use those-can be reused several times as well. Not sure what I'll do when our carrier bag stash runs out though!

I used a drawstring nappy back (had a big one and a small one for long/short trips out), and put the nappies in Nature compostable/biodegradable nappy sacks, then into the drawstring bag. I found any other nappy sacks smelled VILE (worse then poopy nappy!) but the Nature ones are lovely and fragrance free. By double-bagging the nappies you can be sure the smell won't get out, and it also keeps your washable bag clean. Once you get home, nappies go in the bucket and the nappy sacks go in the compost.

The tip about chucking as much poo as you can down the loo while you're out is a good one too.

grannyslippers · 13/11/2007 20:35

Agree with derah. For a while I tried a small drawstring washbag but the moisture tended to seep through, so I use tie up nappy sacks now.

When people asked how i could bear to carry a wet/dirty nappy around I asked what they would do if clothes got wee/poo on(regular occurence with small baby and runny poo! -would they throw them out? No you just put them in a bag and get on with it! You really don't notice. I would normally bag it and put in the bottom of the pushchair or leave in boot of car where possible but we have walked around London with them stuffed in backpack with no problems!

ekra · 21/11/2007 07:26

I used a zip up pouch type thing I bought from Babies R Us. I got a set of 5 so if I had to rinse one out, I'd have others to use.

I really never had a problem with it smelling in my bag.

I have used disposables too and there have been times where I have had to carry home a poo filled disposable inside a horrid scented nappy sack and the combination of those smell much worse in your bag.
