Learning to walk

Hi

My son is 14 months and has taken a few steps for the past month. However he’s not taking much more. Is there anything I can do to develop this into actually walking?

Thank you!

Following! My DS is the same age and will happily toddle holding one hand, and is cruising and climbing like a champ (Dear lord, the climbing...) but showing no inclination to take any steps by himself yet.

My DS was like this. Then one day my dad happened to be over and he stood my son up, waited until he was standing firm, then let go gently and told him to walk to another person in the room (a few steps away).

He did it. First time. I think he just needed to be shown what to do Grin

See mine won’t even hold my hand to walk!! I try to and he will just flop himself down!

He walks along the furniture loads and we say walk to mommy and he does it without holding on to anything but he will fall over after a few steps and hasn’t quite got his balance yet. But this has been a month now and just wondering what I can do to make him do a few more steps each time?!

I don't think there is anything you really can do, its just one of those things they do when they're ready and nothing you do makes any difference! Ds took his first few steps just before his 1st birthday and had been cruising confidently for a couple of months beforehand, yet he didn't decide to take up walking full time until a few days after he turned 14 months! He was perfectly capable of doing it, by then his cruising involved walking next to furniture trailing a hand over it but for some reason he wouldn't venture out of arms reach. Then one day he stood up from my lap and walked a couple of metres to DH, we moved further apart and he walked further. Repeat repeat and suddenly it clicked and he walked from then on!

Mine cruised from about 7/8 months but neither walked until 15/16 months.

I think it's just a confidence thing.

My youngest never even tried to stand up on her own or use any walk along toys until 16 months, I videod her doing that in the morning - standing and flopping back down again because she didn't have balance to stay up, roaring and laughing. In the afternoon I videod her walking straight across the livingroom to the sofa!

They really will just do it in their own time.

Ah thank you all - puts my mind at ease!

He talks and talks and is so confident with his words, I think he probably concentrates more on that than actually moving! He was a late crawler too but he always looks so proud of himself when he does manage a few steps so just wanted to see if there was anything I could do. Thank you all!

Is there anything in the theory that taller babies walk later? I wonder if my DSs centre of gravity is just that bit higher, so balance will take longer! 😂 X

Could well be a theory! DS crawled at 5 months, but didn't walk until 15 months. He's now 15 and almost 6ft!
Juicyoranges · 09/04/2021 14:46

Mine all walked between 14 and 16 months.

Juicyoranges · 09/04/2021 14:49

Sorry I realise that wasn't the question. Mine talked early and walked late. I think quite often they do one, then the other. They develop in their own time - I truly believe. As long as the have opportunities to move about, cruise etc, they will do it in their own time.

My DD just recently started walking at 15 m, despite about 4 months of walking holding my hand! I was beginning to think I'd be doing that forever, but one day she started launching herself a few steps between myself and DH, then the next day she was off! I'd say get as much practice as you can however they will walk, and encourage them to walk a few steps to you. They'll get there!

Maybe! DD is very tall too
Orchidflower1 · 09/04/2021 15:00

@E899 do you have any other chn? I think one of the reasons younger children sometime walk later is because older siblings pass them things, fetch things etc.

E899 · 09/04/2021 15:06

Ah brill thank you! I know you shouldn’t but my friends babies are younger and already walking so just wanted to check!

No other children. He’s very clingy and hates it when I even stand up as he thinks I’m leaving the room so he does have a lot of floor play and is always climbing somewhere but is probably carried a bit more than he should as well!
