Nappy Barrier Cream Advice

Hi all,

Soon to be dad here and I'm hoping someone can help.

Our baby is due end of next month and I'm just in the process of getting all the last minute things we need so that my partner can just relax. One thing that I'm not sure about is nappy barrier cream.

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

a) what brand should I be looking at

b) is barrier cream the same as nappy rash cream? Do I apply it during every nappy change or just when they have a rash?

Thanks and sorry if a silly question.

I used sudocrem if looking a little red (still have a tub of it in the house!). Metanium (yellow stuff) for nappy rash.

MySocalledLoaf · 08/04/2021 12:22

You only use it when they have a rash. I didn’t need it for months and months. Probably you can get it later when you know how sensitive their skin is. One of mine needed special stuff from the chemist, the other was fine with normal brands.

We use sudocrem with every nappy change. DD1 never ever had nappy rash and DD2 hasn’t had nappy rash to date and she’s 6mo

agree with this! Metanium has actual magical powers

I bought bepanthen but have never needed to use it as my baby has never had a rash. You don’t want to use it every time because it can affect the absorbency of the nappy and cause them to have wet sitting against their skin. It’s only necessary if they actually have a rash.

Agree - sudocream for slight redness; yellow Metanium for nappy rash.
Try to stick to water & cotton wool pads when changing (at least at home) as some babies can react to wipes.

Agree that Metanium is special stuff, never heard of it before my little one developed a nasty nappy rash so bad he screamed when touching - couple of applications of this and it cleared right up 🙌🏻

BabyDaddy01 · 08/04/2021 13:15

Thanks for all the helpful replies all :-) I'll grab a tub of sudocrem for if/when we need it.

I use Bepanthen for every nappy. In creases of legs and on bum crack. My baby has never had nappy rash but I have occasionally used sudocrem if his bum looked a little sore.

Pinktruffle · 08/04/2021 15:32

Health visitor told me to use it every change as prevention and that's what I do, keeps my little ones bum nice and soft. I use either Bepanthan or Weleda Nappy cream depending on what in stock when I need it.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 10/04/2021 19:52

We use Bepanthan every nappy change. Wonderful stuff and much nicer consistency than Sudocreme. I remember the nursery I worked in several years ago banning Sudocreme because it was linked to thinning skin? I have no idea whether that’s been disproven since or is still a thing.

AnnaSW1 · 10/04/2021 21:20

Sudocrem and the yellow tube of Metanium in case they get nappy rash. It's magical stuff. Best to have it in than have to do a late night hunt for it if your little one gets a sore bum.

SparrowNest · 11/04/2021 19:43

We use aquaphor ointment, because that was standard when we had our baby in the US, and have never had nappy rash issues except the one time we used a friend’s sudocrem instead - which is much messier too.

The zinc seems useful if there’s actual redness but imo it’s actually pretty useless as a barrier cream compared to alternatives, I’ve got no idea why it’s the standard in the U.K.

Hey!
My daughter was prem so we used vaseline as advised by the neonatal nurses - it's FANTASTIC and cheap. At home we use Aveeno barrier cream - my daughter sleeps 12 hours at night so you can imagine, her nappy is very wet in the morning and she has NEVER had nappy rash. We only use it in the evening as it is very thick. Remember to give baby some breathing space, so nappy free when you can - make sure you have a towel underneath.

Conditionconditioncondition · 11/04/2021 21:55

We’ve never used anything. DS has never had any nappy rash. So you might not need anything
