Was your DC’s night sleep effected when they dropped to one nap?

My DS is approaching 16months and we’ve been trialling one long afternoon nap this week.
It’s been going okay but he seems to be awake for a long period of time at night (up to 2 hours!) is this normal while he adjusts?!
TIA X

Sorry, I don't have much to add but wanted to bump for you. My DD's night sleep didn't really change but we moved nap to middle of day. It's about 12-2 so a pain in the butt for lunch lol. It does mean she has a fairly long afternoon slot to tire herself before bed though.

Thank you!
Yes it feels a bit of a rush at the moment to get him down for his afternoon nap 😂.
I’m hoping things settle down soon as it’s no fun spending two hours trying to get him back off to sleep 😴 X

I'm afraid my DD's night sleep got much better once she dropped to one nap. However whenever she is feeling under the weather, or is having a regression she will have a night wake up of varying lengths. Occasionally when she's overtired (usually due to refusing her nap 🙄) she'll sleep for a few hours then wake up for a few hours absolutely full of beans.

ZooKeeper19 · 02/04/2021 20:31

What time is the mid-day nap? The recommendation (in an ideal world) is up at 7, then nap 12-2pm then bedtime at 7-7:30.

The awake time should be 5 hours morning, 5,5 in the afternoon.

Also make sure he is not hungry or anything like hot/cold/too much light and I'd give white noise a go. But there is no universal solution I am afraid.

Megan2018 · 02/04/2021 20:37

Nap probably needs to be earlier. We dropped to one just after she started nursery, was about 14 months. Nap is usually 12.30ish after lunch.

I find you need roughly 5hr awake windows with nap in the middle. DD wakes about 7.30, nap 12.30, sleep 7.30. Obviously that’s on a good day. Bastard 18 month sleep regression putting pay to that at the moment Grin

Willow4987 · 02/04/2021 20:55

Sorry my experience is that it doesn’t affect nighttime sleep but agree that ideal time is 12-2pm for the nap

Things that normally wake my DS in the night for this amount of time are teething (and subsequent waking when administering calpol), colds etc or sleep regressions

Thanks for all your responses and suggestions.
He does go down between 12-12.30 for 2 hours and usually wakes around 7am
I do my best with ensuring the room is “sleep perfect”. He has white noise on, thermometer in room, I wonder if the temp is something that keeps him awake but we always have it in correct bracket so I don’t know. I question every morning what was wrong the night before LOL. I think maybe I need to relax a bit and reassure myself I’m doing all and the best I can x

DS is almost 16 months and he has only just dropped from 3 to 2 naps when he isn’t at nursery. He wakes at 7-8, naps at 11:30 for 1.5 hrs and then around 4pm for 1.5 hrs. On nursery days he naps between 6-7 too. He always goes to sleep at 9ish so it all evens out.

Easterbunnyishoppingmad · 02/04/2021 22:02

From 9 months ds slept 7-7 regardless of nap times /length.

Kate3150 · 03/04/2021 09:43

@Megan2018- what do you do if DC wakes like super early? My DS was awake at 5.30am this morning and is currently asleep so we won’t be doing the long middday nap today. X

@Kate3150 we’ve never really had early starts, DD not really a morning person. But I’d go for a nap whenever he looks tired later, you can always keep it shorter if it’s late in the day. I would consider 5.30 to still be night time and wouldn’t get up for the day then.

DD had a nap until 4pm the other day but she still managed bed just a bit later at 8pm so I don’t stress too much if timings go off. Especially if we are out and about, I do expect her to fit in.

Kate3150 · 03/04/2021 10:13

@Megan2018- I had a terrible night with DS and couldn’t face an hour battle to get him down at 5.30. My DH very kindly got up with him so I could have a lye in 🤣. X

It didn’t affect nighttime sleep for my son. He went down to one nap around 14 months. But around 16 months we had a 5 week stretch of very early mornings that came out of nowhere and then went away again. His molars were coming through VERY slowly. We had a similar stretch at a later stage for the same reason. So your disturbed nights may be for similar reasons, or some other developmental thing going on, and not be related to the nap schedule. As your timings all sound about right.
