Potty training questions - help!

I'm thinking about potty training and I've decided to book a week of annual leave in June to try the Oh, Crap! approach (strip from waist down etc.). The weather will hopefully be warm enough to spend most of the day in the garden.

My question is - what happens if she goes back to nursery the following week and still isn't in pants? I assume I'll just have to put her in pants and send in a lot of spares to allow for accidents?

Has anyone else done this method successfully? Did you have to take annual leave? Any advice about what to do when sending into nursery? I'm sure I'm over-thinking this, but I'm a real planner so I like to be prepared.

Thanks!

I would discuss it with nursery beforehand and see what their approach would be. THey will need to work with you an vice versa.

I would think it will depend on how far your DC has got. One or two accidents a day, may be reasonable to send in pants with lots of spares. Only one or two successes a day and only after constant reminders, send back in nappies.

How old is she? Is she showing any signs of being ready to train?

MeadowHay · 31/03/2021 11:35

How old will she be? I did oh crap over 4 days and she went into nursery on day 5. She did have a few accidents in the first couple of weeks, most of them were actually soiling which shocked us as she had never done that at home before! So definitely be prepared that they behave differently there. Nursery were super on board and put a lot of effort into assisting her with pooing comfortably on the potty at nursery and after a few weeks she had nailed it. If she does well at home in the first week I would continue at nursery, some accidents is par for the course for most kids and nursery will be used to it. If however she was totally unable to wee fairly reliably with clothes on by the end of week one I would imagine you would need to re-evaluate because obviously there's only so much you can reasonably expect of staff and it also might be a sign the child isn't ready for training anyway. Ours was 26m when we trained.

We did this book with my son when he was 2 years and 9 months. It was great! He only had 3 wee accidents (between day 1 and 2) and that was it! I took the week off work and we stayed hone like the book suggests. The book recommends that you don't put them in pants for a while so I just put him in loose trousers with no pants. I'd do that for nursery. Also a big part of the book is regularly putting them on the potty, like every 30 minutes to start with. I kept this going the next week too, not sure how that would work at nursery? I did find that it was quite a few weeks before my son started to tell me he needed the toilet, prior to that it was me initiating the toilet trips. Perhaps speak to them and see if they will help by regularly putting her on the potty for the first few weeks? Good luck!

Thanks all - that's great advice.

I'll have a chat to the nursery and get them onboard before we start. They're a really supportive, small nursery so I don't think it'll be a problem. She's the only one currently in cloth nappies and they've never been anything but totally supportive about that.

She'll be a couple of weeks shy of her 2nd birthday when we plan to try. She's actually showing a lot of the signs now and has already had a wee and a poo on the potty in her room just by asking to sit on it. I just didn't want to take the plunge until I'd cleared some proper time to dedicate to the process.

I thought oh method says no pants for a few weeks?
I tried DS at home during lockdown last year. No joy. He definitely wasn't getting it. He was just 2.

Sent him back to nursery in the summer. the staff said other kids were potty training and he wanted to use the mini toilet too.

So on a weekend, I tried him at home naked. He was definitely understanding it better this time. He went back to nursery with just trackie bottoms, no pants. Only one accident.

Tried putting pants on him after those few days and he started wetting himself. So removed pants again for a few weeks.

I think the book says pants or pull ups give the child the feeling that they are wearing nappies. So they need to be trained before putting pants back on.

Honestly I think if they are ready it shouldn't be difficult

Waterdropsdown · 31/03/2021 12:20

If they are ready you don’t need a week - a weekend will be enough. If not ready even after a week there will be constant accidents. Saying this after trying to train my twins at the same time when one was obviously ready the other was not. He went back in pull ups for a few months and when we went for it again it just worked no issue at all.

ForeverBubblegum · 31/03/2021 12:26

We went from naked bottom half, to just loose pajama bottoms with no pants for a week or so before adding pants. Might be an option

Potterythrowdown · 31/03/2021 12:35

We did it - it was brilliant! We did loose trousers with no pants for a week or two and then pants on after that. Think we had one accident in pants on the first day of wearing them and that was it.

Distiller91 · 31/03/2021 14:07

I did oh crap method quite recently and we are now all toilet trained! Nursery just did it alongside me. I sent in 6 spares of undies and trousers but it didn't take long for him to pick it up so i knew he was ready. Ooh also a pair of washable croc style shoes too as they could just clean them when he did have an accident!

Ihaveoflate · 31/03/2021 14:51

Thanks for to the shoe tip @Distiller91. I was wondering about that!

Right, time to stock up on baggy trousers (for her, not me!). I'll have a crack at it over a week in June and if she's not at the clothes stage by the time she goes to nursery, then we can always go back to nappies and give it another go later on.

I'd also recommend lots of practice with pulling trousers down before you start - the idea is that they go from bare bum to trousers fairly soon after so they need to be able to get them down quick when it's time to go!

Aria2015 · 31/03/2021 17:51

@Ihaveoflate if it's June then you could just stick her in shorts? Doesn't have to be loose trousers. Just no pants. Also, you didn't mention it, but we still did nappies for bed and naps. I waited until my lo was dry in the night which was much later. It didn't have a negative impact on the daytime potty training. Just mentioning as some people feel pressured to do both day and night but in my experience and that of quite a few friends, being dry at night seems to come a bit later. For us it was a lot later but it just happened naturally and was actually initiated by my lo so we've had no bed wetting which has been great!

Ihaveoflate · 31/03/2021 18:51

That's a good idea @Aria2015 - thanks. I wasn't planning on nap/night training at all, just hoping it would happen naturally as she got older! She's pretty much always dry after her nap now anyway, which I took as a sign she might be nearly ready.
