4 week old baby keeps crying

During the day he is fine but in the middle of the night he wakes for a feed.

He is fed and winded but if you try to put him back to bed he cries for anything up to 3 hours!

I have tried patting him, walking up and down with him, tried a dummy but none of those things work. It is only during the night that we have this issue.

Any ideas?

getting enough to eat?

ruddynorah · 09/11/2007 12:41

is he in your room with you?

LadySanders · 09/11/2007 12:52

i am of the have-the-baby-in-bed-with-you school of thought so depends where you come from on that - but ds1 would have cried anytime if he was separated from me, esp at 4 weeks, so largely slept in my bed for at least the first few months, problem solved. this may be why he isn't crying during the day, ie he is with you and therefore content?

during the day he will "play" for a while and at night he sleeps well other than this one crying bit (this morning from 4.15 - 6)

He is sleeping in my room in his moses basket. He had taken most of a 4oz bottle (there was still a little bit in there so i think he'd had enough milk)

the wind came up easily so i don't think its that

infacol?

gripe water?

Does he get a nappy change after the feed at night?

haychee · 09/11/2007 13:47

I used to put a hot water bottle in the cot while i had lo out for feeds etc. So it was all cosy when i put them back in.

Could he just be cold? It is soo much colder this week especially at night.

Phraedd · 09/11/2007 13:56

using infacol and gripe water.

has a nanppy change too

I did wonder about the house being cold but because he is swaddled, he always feels warm.

When my 2 were little they were supposed to sleep on their backs.
Occassionaly i used to put them on their fronts, dd2 loved it.

Dont they get a growth spurt about 4-6wks ish too, that may be contributing.

Drop some infacol onto the dummy, it encourages them to suck it.

Cant think of many more tips.

puppydavies · 09/11/2007 14:09

he wants a cuddle?

CountessDracula · 09/11/2007 14:10

I think this is just what 4 week old babies do! (well most of them)

emmaagain · 09/11/2007 14:32

I'm in the take-them-into-my-own-bed camp too

Phraedd · 09/11/2007 14:32

he cries still when he is being cuddled and he cries very loundly.....or maybe it just sounds loud because the house is so quiet?

He had a growth spurt at 2 weeks and i thought the next one didn't come till 6 weeks?

He has been doing this for about 2 weeks now.

It makes no difference whether he is on his back, side or tummy or up on my shoulder

Id try harder with the dummy i think.

How much have you tried with it?

Not that im into dummies at all! But i did use one for both my 2 from about this age to about 5months ish, then i took it away.

Phraedd · 09/11/2007 17:49

he uses the dummy ok except when he has this crying bit

he just cries and won't suck on anything that is placed in his mouth.

It is so frustrating!

Does he show any signs of pain?
Like drawing his knees up?

Sounds like pain to me if he wont take the dummy and screams regardless of everything you try

CharlieJo · 19/11/2007 15:40

Any advice on using a dummy for sucky babies? My son wants to feed every 2 hours, but usually just sucks the teat and takes 1/2 to 1oz. Don't really want to give him a dummy at night as he sleeps for 3-4 hour stretches without the help of a dummy. Can I just give the dummy for 30 mins here and there to stall him til the next feed?
