5 year old daughter concern

Hi this is a hard one as I dont know how to put this across. My 5yr old daughter does this "humping" movement when she is sitting down on her foot or say if she was sitting on the edge of a chair for example. It seems that she enjoys it as she nearly goes into a trance. I never really see her do it at home it's more so when she is in other peoples houses playing with her cousins etc. She is doing it in school now too because I have asked her about it. She refers to it as "horsey". I have to her to stop but she comes out from school and says sorry I done horsey again today mam.im nearly considering contacting her teacher to keep an eye on her. I dont know how normal this is or has anyone any experience in how to stop her doing so. Sorry for the rambling on just needs some advice. Xx

It's very normal. Google infant gratification disorder, it's basically a fancy name for infant masturbation. They do it because it feels nice. Tell her it's absolutely fine to do this, but it's something we do in private and not around other people. It's very likely a comfort thing and nothing to worry about x

Definitely don't shame her for it or anything either! It's perfectly normal. And like others has said; just tell her it's okay to do but to do in bedroom in private when she's on her own! X

Previous poster is right - it’s very common.
Encourage her not to do it in school - maybe mention it to the teacher also

Or it could be maladaptive daydreaming. That tends to happen with rocking movements or other rhythmic movement as well (like walking). Since she seems to go in a trance it could be that.

Very normal, my DD is 7 and still does it. Now she is 5 just try and explain to her that she should try and do it in private. The teacher probably does try and distract her and will have seen it lots of times. It's likely a comfort thing too. My DD did it in school and the teacher was well aware of what it was.

Thanks so much for your quick replies. I felt so guilty all weekend because I felt nearly angry with her for doing it all the time in school and her cousins. I'll go with the approach of telling her it's ok but to do it in her bedroom in private. Thanks so much again xx
