Anything you can do to encourage sitting unaided?

My massive 20 week old now can't use his infant carrier anymore or a shopping trolley as he's over the limit for the baby seat so the sooner he can learn to sit in the toddler seat the better so interested in what we can do to help him?

Also any cheap buggies for massive babies but fit in tiny boot suggestions as taking his pram in our car to the supermarket is a bit frustrating?

Lots of tummy time and use a sling which helps them build core stretch. I can't really envision what you're saying he is too big to fit in, do you mean the infant carrier carseat? I wouldn't be put off using a shopping trolley infant seat unless his head is tipping over the back. I can't imagine the weight limit matters. It's not like a car seat.

That said, neither of mine sat unaided for any period of time before 7-8 months, so you've got a way to go. If shopping is an issue, a sling is the way to go as it's much easier.

@mindutopia I have a condition that effects balance so I ve been too scared to use his sling myself in public incase I trip on something I can't see, we do carry him around the house a lot .

I mean both, he isn't on a percentile height wise anymore and about 99.6th for weight although that's just a rough guess with the bathroom scales as the weight clinics closed.

Tummy time helps build up the muscles they need for independent sitting.

In terms of a buggy we had a little fold up mac laren with DSS is small and light.

Both of mine crawled before sitting unaided (at 8 months). I would be worried about pushing it when so young. In Germany they are adamant that babies shouldn’t sit up until they can get into a sitting position by themselves. Not sure whether that’s true but even if he does start sitting unaided a moving shopping trolley toddler seat won’t be safe for a good while! Agree with a sling or just getting online shopping and small shops that you can put under the pram might have to do?

Actually ds was 6 months crawling, dd 8 months.

Second tummy time. And don’t make him sit before he’s ready. And avoid putting him in baby seats before he can sit properly. We have a kinderkraft all road which is good. You can lie it flat too - 5 months might be too young to make him sit all the time.

@napody a sling is just too dangerous for me to use, glad to hear they could still crawl, most people mention them getting all milestones before crawling.

It just sucks that the one place we re allowed to go after being so isolated in my pregnancy it's difficult with his size, at least he starts a baby class soon.

@Novid19 I ll check the kinderkraft out, we ve got the pram seat titled back at the moment as he got too long for the carry cot.

If only I d had a reason to have a growth scan, his size was a complete shock and I d gone well overdue with the maternity ward being so short so wasn't prepared well with what we had bought for him.

Why's he coming to the supermarket if there is someone at home who can look after him? Shops are asking people to shop alone.

Is he really too big for the car seat? That would be unusual at 5 months. Most of them last to at least 9 months. If his head isn't over the top, then he is fine even if his legs are too long.

@HercwasanEnemyofEducation yes he's really too big for it.
I can't drive due to my disability and wanted to grab a couple of t-shirts in person as i m too fat for my pre-pregnancy clothes and not sure on size (i m on a very restricted diet but it's ridiculously slow loss) but you're right he can stay in the car with DH in the future.
