Is my ds too young to potty train?

Hi everyone

My ds is 19 months old and over the past couple of weeks has started telling us when is about to or has just done a wee. He grabs his nappy and either says wee or just makes a funny noise. We let him come into the toilet with us and everytime he sees us sitting on the toilet he points to it and says wee wee. I have noticed that he his going for some time with a dry nappy as well. I just don't want to start him too early and put him of completely.

I bought a potty ages ago but his bum was too big for it, so we just bought a toilet seat instead. He's not that interested in sitting on it though so we haven't pushed the issue.

So, does anyone know of any good potties for boys and do you think he's ready?

Sorry for the ramble!

He certainly sounds very aware of DOING a wee, which is great, but I guess what you can't know before you try is whether he is aware enough seconds BEFORE he is doing it; that's the key.

He also clearly knows what the loo is for; but if he's not interested in being on it himself....I think you need a good few 'signs' of readiness together, to make a child fully ready.

Have a go, why not, but as you know he is very young. He may not be really ready.

FWIW, we didn't bother with a potty for ds. We had a downstairs loo so he just went straight to the loo. Potties are not obligatory! Good luck.

tescos do a very good big potty that doubles as a step for washing hands at the sink etc.

no harm having a go...good luck

Thank you both - have heard that asda potties are good for boys so might check that out as well as the tesco potty.

Thanks again!

I would go on ability not age. My DD asked fro pants from 17 months.

IME its nothing to do with age, its when they are ready. You are right one of the key signs is that they are aware when they are doing a wee/poo and that their nappy is dirty. But also, they need to be able to understand simple instructions and be able to pull their trousers and pants up and down otherwise they will never make it in time. Nothing to lose for giving it a go but again if he hasn't managed to get one wee in the potty by the end of day 1, I would go back to nappies and try again in a month or two. Don't be worried about doing this, I did this twice before dd cracked it and the time she did I knew she was going to IYSWIM . HTH

I agree it is nothing to do with age, I also think it is nothing to do with pulling up pants either

If you keep him naked on the bottom half at home and give him access to a small potty he is old enough to use it on his own (if he wishs and you teach him how to)

You could introduce a BSL sign for toilet or one of your own. My 14 month old dd points into her left open palm to indicate that she wants to go to the toilet.

Good small potties include the big stable large potty from Tesco's mentioned before, asda, tesco and boots also do potties which are fairly small.

Or if you buy off Ebay look for 'Baby Bjorn Little Potty' designed for under 2 years old...we used one from 3 months.

Good luck
