Baby not smiling at 6 weeks should I be worried?

I know babies develop differently but the fact doctors and health visitor keeps asking is worrying the hell out of me

I wouldn't worry, it's still really early. I'm sure mine didn't smile before at least 2/3 months xx

Usagi12 · 26/03/2021 15:21

Tbf babies don't do an awful lot at this age so it's probably one of the only things they can ask you about 💐 x

My baby smiled once at 6 weeks, but not consistently until 8-12 weeks. I wouldn’t worry, they just ask because that’s the only milestone at this age!

Are you counting from their birth date or due date?

But no, you shouldn’t be worried. Some babies are just a bit more serious than others and do this milestone a bit later. My DD smiled at 7 weeks, but she’s a bright 4 year old now.

My LB was really, really colicky at birth and didn’t start regularly socially smiling in until about 14 weeks (when he stopped screaming bless him). HV and GP kept an eye incase it needed onward referral but they weren’t hugely concerned. I’m therefore pretty certain 6 weeks is completely fine xx

No deffo not! Still teeny!!
They have guidelines to go by to which they need to ask but as always every baby is different.

I've just Googled it and the first thing that came up was that babies typically start smiling somewhere around the 6-12 weeks mark.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 26/03/2021 19:38

Ah OP. I remember being concerned about this so much. Dont worry, 6 weeks is still so tiny. My son didnt crack one out until maybe 8 weeks and he's developing fine!

marti2 · 27/03/2021 08:55

My ds didn't smile until about 9 weeks and he's now 8 months and never stops smiling! Don't worry 😊

Lolalovesmarmite · 28/03/2021 11:52

6 weeks would be really early. DD didn’t smile until about 14 weeks and DS was a bit earlier, probably about 9 weeks or so.

I remember the HV asking me if DD did this or that yet and I was like no? But it all came. Things like did she turn her head towards sound and did she blow bubbles. Like others said I think smiling is one of the first things people say babies actively do, so they start asking early.

Thanks again for the comments here... had to re read again as another doctor appt saw this being asked and noted...

What Usagi12 said is wise.
DD rarely smiled before 5m old. Totally normal kid. Now adult bothering me for things.
