Is this silent reflux or 'normal' baby?

Hi FTM here with limited access to other parents and babies to allow for a comparison of experiences! I'm not sure if my 6week old DD is showing signs of silent reflux or is just being a 'regular' baby. Shes mostly breastfed with occasional formula top ups.

Here are some symptoms -

  • lots of farting, particularly in the evening and when laid down. Seem painful to get out (often goes red in face)
  • arches back, assuming when trying to pass gas or poo, can disrupt feeding
  • bloated belly, again worsening as the day goes on
  • can really hate being laid down
  • sometimes in the night it sounds like she is swallowing down something
  • sometimes coughs when at breast disrupting feed. Same goes for arching back although this has improved.
  • sometimes has bubbles at mouth during a bottle feed (expressed) or afterwards

Rarely full on sick although does sometimes spit up, this can be a very long time after a feed.

I really have no idea if all of the above is normal or I'm missing something- all views welcome!

Sounds like silent reflux but for many babies this is a normal developmental issues until the top of the stomach full forms.

Sounds like it could be reflux. My baby has it and spends most of the time passing wind and going red in the face. My baby does vomit though. Give your GP or HV a call and see if they can help. Gaviscon can help.

Yes sounds like silent reflux. My son had reflux and vomited after every feed, reflux is obvious. Silent reflux is harder to spot but your baby does sound like they may have it.

Things that helped me;.

  • using a baby sling so baby doesn't have to lie down flat
  • proper attention to burping after a feed, it can take ages to get a burp out. There are some excellent YouTube videos to help with your technique
  • tummy massage and bicycling legs, to help get the farts out
  • I went dairy free for a year while I breastfed

Buy her Infacol. It's about £7. Give two squirts religiously before every feed.

this is infacol also available at pharmacists

If you can imagine feeling sick and having heartburn all day long, then you can imagine how your baby feels and understand why they're upset.

Very weird sounds like reflux, my baby Tommy was fine his whole months alive, bless him xx

Infacol can make reflux worse as it's quite acidic or so I've been told. Made my LO worse when I tried it. Great for burps though

Has she been checked properly for tongue tie? My 7 week old had all these symptoms so he’s been on gaviscon for a couple of weeks which improved things but didn’t stop them.
Anyway it was playing on my mind that a midwife when he was born passed a comment about him having “mild” tongue tie so took him to see a private specialist and turns out he had it pretty badly so had it cut this week. The lady who did it said a lot of babies with it show reflux symptoms as they swallow so much air due to poor latches.
It’s only been a couple of days but symptoms seemed to have completely stopped.

She did have tongue tie so we had it snipped at 2 weeks. We still have to concentrate on her latch sometimes but mostly she gets on with feeding well now.

I'm wondering if the reflux (if that'd what it is) will eventually go away by itself? And at what age?

How much wind is too much wind and not normal?

My gp said reflux normally rectifies itself between 6 months to the end of the first year when the digestive system matures.
Wind wise I’d say there probably isn’t a normal amount as it must vary between babies. But my baby was burping 5+ times through a breast feed at his worst (and several huge farts afterwards 🙈). Since having his tongue tie done and having his gaviscon it’s dropped to maybe 1-2 of each?

Sounds more like colic, reflux doesn't cause the gassy issues.
