My baby girl earlier on seemed to choke although I’m not sure on what. She was sitting in her bouncer with her dummy in while I was just tidying her room ready for bedtime routine.
She spat the dummy out, went bright red, was screaming/choking, waving her arms and loads of bright white mucus(?!) came out of her nose.
I got rid of it and she calmed down and after a while seemed fine but just upset.
I feel very shaken FTM here and keep crying. She’s asleep now and I think she’s fine.
Has this happened to anyone before?

Sounds more like gagging then choking. Children who are choking go blue and silent and children who are gagging go red and make noise. If they are gagging then they are sorting it out themselves but it is scary to watch.

Maybe she vomited and milk came through her nose?

Bless you, it is very scary when things like this happen and can really play on your mind for a while after. Just wanted to offer some reassurance, it sounds like baby may have been gagging rather than choking. I've always been very anxious of choking when it came to weaning so had a little read up on what to look out for and I came across that choking is mainly silent and lips turn blue/no sound. Gagging is red and upset. Babies gag reflexes are closer to the front of their mouths when they're little but do move back as they develop. That put my mind at ease and I hope it does yours too. I remember once my little boy was crying in the night and when I bought his bottle up to feed him he was waving his arms around, bright red and "choking". I scooped him up, patted his back in a frenzy and the white mucous you mentioned came up all over me. I still to this day have no idea what happened but so long as your baby is rested, clear airways and okay in them self then I'd say they're okay. I know it's so worrying though, sending hugs x

Oh thank you so much @HopingforbabyD that has really helped me feel a bit better, it sounds like she was definitely gagging then.
Not sure on what but guessing it was milk kind of mucus that came out of her nose. Just keep seeing her panicked/pained little face.
I’m also terrified of weaning but at least I now know the difference between gagging and choking xx

This has happened to my baby twice, once at 4 weeks and once at 5 weeks. She went red and was flapping her arms around and the mucus came out of her nose, it was awful I was terrified and we went to A&E both times. They assured me it’s really common and she wasn’t actually choking. They said with choking they go blue and limp not red/ purple and thrashing round so it did make me feel better. She’s been diagnosed with reflux so is on gaviscon now so I’m praying it won’t happen again. I was exactly the same as you though, I couldn’t stop crying when I thought about it x

It's so scary isn't it so no wonder you are shaken. Why not look for a mini first aid course you can book on to locally. It'll make you feel more prepared in future.

That isn’t choking it’s gaggings. Kids go silent when they choke - it’s good prep for weaning. Gagging is good (even if it’s scary) and you should encourage her to deal with it herself because she’ll learn how to deal with the limits of her mouth and prevent choking
Fredsgirl19 · 24/03/2021 21:29

Sounds like a very typical reflux reaction. Or nice to see. The acid is quite painful for them and it shocks them a bit. She is very likely absolutely
Fine but I know it's hard for you to see her like that

theresaplaceforus · 25/03/2021 07:45

Thank you all so much for your kind responses I obviously watched her like a hawk last night - but she’s absolutely fine now and if I happens again I’ll hopefully be a lot calmer xx

@theresaplaceforus I couldn’t sleep after it happened I was terrified it would happen when I was asleep so I bought one of those breathing monitors that clip to the nappy and an alarm goes off if they stop breathing. It’s made me relax a bit more xx

I’ve just remembered this did happen to me when DD1 was 48 hours old and we were still in hospital. From my screams the midwifes thought my baby had died. Nearly 5 years later and it still makes me tear up.
