Precocious Puberty - Zoladex

Bee8282 · 24/03/2021 13:16

My daughter who is 8 years and 3 months is currently being tested for idiopathic precocious puberty. The consultant thinks this is very likely and wants to start her on Zoladex 10.8mg as soon as possible to delay puberty.

Her BMI is in the 99.6% range and she is struggling with body image because the early puberty had made her gain weight too quickly.

Does anyone know if the Zoladex will help lose weight or delay weight gain.

I would also love to hear from anyone whose child has received these injections and how they responded to them.

Thanks!

My daughter started puberty about 8, breasts budding. Period came at 11. I never thought to take her to the drs and she wasn't overweight (about 25th centile) so I can't help in that respect.
I'd be wary of interfering with her hormones tbh, she's 8, not 5 or 6.
Hope someone with more experience can help

Thanks, It has been ongoing for over a year but due to Covid her appointment has finally come through.
The reason for concern is because it can stunt her growth but thank you for your reply x

My daughter started around her 7th birthday and we were offered the choice of stopping it. Ultimately we didn't take it as I didn't like the potential of side effects in the future. She's 9 and a half now, no sign of periods yet (although hormones seem to cause zits on a monthly basis already). Has a small bust but public and armpit hair hasnt come in any further - we were told can be 2-3 years from first signs to periods appearing.
(so as not to drip feed, mine has ASD. Its commonly linked to early onset puberty)

She is also now at the final stage of puberty just before her periods start. They have taken x-rays of her wrist bone which has come back that she has the bones of a 12 year old, 4 years too early so we need to stop this because she is going through her teenage growth spurt now and they calculate she will be about 4ft 10in if left.

I haven't had experience of Zoladex but from my own daughter's experience I know that it is vital to get a second opinion and to ensure that you ask as many questions as possible. I found that it is the mother / parents that are in the driving seat; it's important to know what's going on. Unfortunately, my daughter, after many hospital and consultant visits was diagnosed with juvenile gigantomastia - at the age of 12 she had a breast reduction and 13 a mastectomy - not good. Remember you know your daughter better than anyone. Good luck!
