Favour bags for birthdays

I am not from the U.K. and I want to make sure I get this right so apologies if this sounds a bit bizarre to some.
Our DD is a preschooler and when her friends celebrate their birthdays in the nursery they always provide favour bags to all children. Am I required to do something in return? I am referring to things such as congratulate the child ( although I don't know them or their parents ) or anything else such as buy a gift? Which would mean the gift will be received after the kids birthday. Is there a British tradition for this?

It's normal (at least in my children's experience) for the birthday child to bring in sweets or cake to nursery/school for everyone else to enjoy. You don't need to get the birthday child a gift in this instance. However if you're attending an actual birthday party hosted by the parents for their child then you should give a card and gift to the birthday child. It's usual for the hosts to give each invited guest party/favour bag.

Thank you so much. That's exactly how we do it at home too. I just wanted to make sure ans thought it won't harm to ask on here.
