Took my little girl to the doctor and she has croup. We thought she had covid so we had a covid test done but 111 advised us to see a gp. Which we did..she has a really croaky cry and a cough. She feels warm and shes grumpy. She still wants to play. The doctor gave her steroids and told us to see a gp if it gets worse over the day. Is there anything else we can do?

Plenty rest, fluids and paracetamol/ibuprofen if she’s unsettled with it. Some say a steamy bathroom can help if it’s worsening but I would always seek medical attention if you are concerned re croup. The steroids should work well and hopefully your daughter will be on the mend soon but do get advice/999 if you’re concerned at all. Hope she’s feeling better soon.

I am surprised they didn’t suggest cool moist air.

Get a humidifier or hot steaming shower, it should give your child immediate relief

I just read NHS don’t recommend (but in US they are fine with it: healthcare.utah.edu/the-scope/shows.php?shows=0_bo3b8lay )

My son had a bad case of croup, he was already on steroid for asthma and I thought he was having a serious asthma attack, I called the ambulance and they said it was croup and first thing they did was open our front door and let the cool night air in. And immediately my son was much better. It blew my mind away. It’s why I believe it can help

If often gets worse at night, so snuggled up next to an open window can really help.
