DS holding on to wee

DS1 has been potty training for 2.5 weeks now. Very hit and miss on wetting himself/weeing in the potty. My main concern is that he only goes 2-3 times a day (and is dry at night), usually preceeded by an hour of pants up/down, tipee-toe dancing and not sitting still anywhere (especially not the potty). He wants to wear pants during the day - refuses nappy but will wear a pull-up if we're going out.

Any suggestions on how to pursuade him to go when he needs to, rather than holding on too long and becoming desperate?

Can holding on so long cause any problems (bladder/kidney infection)?

when they first start potty training they wee frequently and then they start to store it up to only go a few times a day which can seem like they're holding it back but really they've just got the hang of it

IIRC its very difficult for them to hold back when they feel that need to pee (not saying impossible) .. he may not have a problem he may just be getting it sorted .. dry at night is a good sign that he has a fairly mature bladder (my DS still can't do that really and he's nearly 4)

does he drink lots during the day? maybe you could up his fluids

what colour is his pee when he finally goes .. the paler it is the more fluids he has (I think)

Thanks Twiglett,

I understand that he seems to have got the hang of storing it up and only needing to go 2-3 times a day, but it's the difficulty letting go that's the problem. He gets very distressed and must be absolutely bursting to go but doesn't seem to be able to release on demand - something that's probably just going to take time.
I've decided to keep him in pull-ups until he has mastered that side of things (then we'll have the poos to contend with!).

He's 2.8 now and he had a little sister in July so we probably just need to give him more time.

He doesn't drink a great deal (never has) maybe 1-2 cups of water/juice but he has a 9oz bottle of milk at bedtime.

His wee isn't too dark that it worries me, so we'll have wait and see.

just wanted to add that pale pee is a really good thing as it shows that the body is properly hydrated- most of do not pee light enough!!!

he's still fairly young though

the thing I found most frustrating with DS is how he got the whole toilet training thing .. and was perfect for a couple of months .. using the toilet whenever he needed .. and then he started pooing in his pants .. used to drive me potty ('scuse the pun) .. really it did

its just a time thing really

if he's having lots of fruit and veg he will be getting additional fluids. does he want to go to the loo then can't? if so have you tried running taps to encourage him?
