14 Week old almost out of size 3-6 month?? Clothes confusion.

My boy is almost out of size 3-6 month clothes - I'm not worried about his weight, as having dropped a centile when born (milk didn't come in but I didn't realize Sad) he's back on his original one, and HV happy with his weight. He's also quite tall (long?)

My concern though is that only three weeks ago this size was only just not-too-big for him. So the clothes have gone from too big to too small in just a month! Will this continue?? Will he be in 9-12 in a week, then 1yr-18months by May?? Or will it slow down?

It slows down. DS was a big baby, high percentile. Still is. He outgrew 0-3 at 7 weeks and 3-6 months around 15/16 weeks?

He's in 18-24 month clothes now at 15 months so yes, they do slow down. You never grow more quickly than when you're brand new.

sorryiasked · 17/03/2021 23:09

Don't go by the size label - different brands vary hugely.
Lay them out next to each other and sort small to large and wear them in that order.
Babies will have growth spurts but he won't go through 1yrs clothes in 3 months.

GrumpyHoonMain · 17/03/2021 23:12

Is he growing length wise or width wise? I’d be more worried about obesity if my 14 week old was outgrowing the waist sizes on 3-6 month clothing and less worried if it was length.

At 14 weeks old DS was in 6-9 mths but he was so lean they looked ridiculous.

Ignore the age, look at the length like with EU brands, the ages like women's clothes sizes are all nonsense and differ by brand.

My daughter was walking around in 2-4 month stuff at 10 months Grin and because of toilet training and having no bum she was wearing 4-6month shorts last summer at 1.5years.

Gloomandglow · 17/03/2021 23:24

My iungest wa 21lbs at 16 weeks and wearing 12/18 months. He was a pudding.
He's almost 5 now and slimmed down but very tall.

I worried a bit about the rate he was growing but PPs are right in saying they do slow down and even out eventually!

Gloomandglow · 17/03/2021 23:25

Iungest= youngest

choosername1234 · 17/03/2021 23:43

Yep, I have a tall chubby baby too. She is 17 weeks and in 6-9 months clothes. She is expensive to clothe!!

SleepingStandingUp · 17/03/2021 23:46

It will slow down because clothes go from being by a lb at a time (up to 5lb, 6lb, 7lb), to 3 months (0-3, 3-6) to 6 months (12-18, 18-24) to years (2-3) so they'll be comparatively bigg r than when they went into a previous size. I hope.

Currently moving my 15 month old twins over to 2-3 years

LouNatics · 17/03/2021 23:56

Don’t worry about the numbers on the labels, just worry about if they fit or not. Like PPs my children often went down sizes as well as up (especially after potty training and losing the nappy layer)

I remember there was a time when my middle child could wear their older siblings clothes, their own or their younger siblings almost interchangeably, obviously it depended on the exact garment but the same child could be found wearing 12-18 month shorts, a 11-12 year t shirt and a 5-6 year cardigan, on the same child on the same day.

Yes they slow down. But also they are all different shapes and all clothes are cut diffrently.

SleepingStandingUp · 17/03/2021 23:59

DS,5, spent the morning in 2-3 yo swim shorts and rash vest. I mean it was all a bit short and right and we couldn't have left the house but he fit in it and he normally is dressed in 5-6 years clothes!!

1990shopefulftm · 18/03/2021 00:00

My baby was just in 9-12 months at that age, he's now 18 weeks and some of his 12-18 months t-shirts will fit. He's 99.6th percentile for weight and head size and now off the chart for height,so we only get clothes 2nd hand and it's a waste buying new at this point.
I ve been told they slow down when they get more mobile.

Potterythrowdown · 18/03/2021 07:20

I've just had to quickly buy some 6-9 month sleepsuits for similar age DD. She's only been in 3-6 month for a few weeks but she's suddenly filled them!

As pp have said growth varies especially over the first year.

Superscientist · 18/03/2021 09:21

I have the opposite problem as my wee one refuses to put grow clothes!
She's 7 months and yesterday was wearing an entirely 0-3months outfit even though she is above the weight and height for the clothes! At 5 months when she was still comfortably in 0-3months clothes I asked out hv to measure her length as well as her height. My hv said not to worry about size based on clothes because they vary so much. She's on the 10th percentile for length and 30th for weight.

We find she grows out of asda clothes first (their labels are ~0.5kg smaller than other brands), sainsburys clothes seem longer for us and her 0-3 month outfit yesterday was from m&s

If they are only growing out of the body you can get vest extenders.

QS90 · 18/03/2021 11:45

What a lot of really helpful replies! Thank-you everyone! I'm not worried that he is too fat, he's just long, and rounding out lovely having started off life with poor arms like little pipecleaners, after being induced for being "too large" (only 8.7lbs in the end and tall!) and then a rocky start with undersupply of milk the first week (now happily combo fed).

Reassuring to hear it does level off, and the vest extenders are a great idea, I'd never heard of them so will defo try. Also interesting to hear that the sizes have more between them going up, which makes sense.

Sizes vary everywhere I found Matalan to be the absolute worse and always on the small side. My DS Has always been dinky. He is 20 months old and in 18-24 months now but it's all big on him. His bottoms are still 12-18 months and they're still too long in the leg!

It'll slow down he sounds a nice weight.

QueenOfPain · 18/03/2021 12:01

I’d be worried about obesity if my 14 week old was outgrowing clothing

At 14 weeks [my baby] was so lean

Does this PP hear themselves? Worried about a new baby getting obese?

Snookie00 · 18/03/2021 12:05

Agreed @QueenOfPain. That previous comment would fit in perfectly in that ridiculous baby boast thread.

QueenOfPain · 18/03/2021 12:12

Just nasty and uncalled for, but such is the neurotic competitive under eating underbelly of mumsnet sometimes.

Just remember PP, there’s a fine line between a “soooo lean” baby and failure to thrive.

Mylittlesandwich · 18/03/2021 12:15

I saw that too. I don't think you can diagnose a baby as obese...
Plus babies are supposed to have fat! If DS hadn't been born with any fat on him, when he struggles to breastfeed he would have been in big trouble. Good grief.

Yup. DS was always a big abovr average die to an excellent tube feeding regime rather than any glory on my part, but it did mean that when he was v poorly and couldn't eat we had "give". He's been consistently 50th and now 25th and I hate it. There's nothing spare (unlike his fat baby brothers 🤩)
