Cigarette smoke smell in room coming from next door

Hi folks

Hoping someone can help.

Our first baby is due at the end of may and we’re just in the process of getting everything sorted. We’re almost there but I’m starting to worry a little.

Basically, we live in a terrace house and both our bedroom and the room that will be the babies nursery sometimes smells of cigarette smoke which is coming from next door. Not like walking into the house of a smoker, but as non smokers, it’s something that we notice from time to time.

I’m in the process of filling any gaps I can find and basically just trying to seal the place, but I can’t help but worry.

Is this a cause for concern? Like I said, it’s not like walking into the house of a smoker. I have family members who smoke so I know what a smoky house smells like. We are planning on having the baby crib in our room for the first 6 months and have her on the opposite side of the room to walk that backs on to next door.

Just want to know if I’m over thinking things or should I be concerned. If so does anyone have any advice or experience with this?

I'd worry too. Keep both rooms well ventilated, open windows and open doors. I would also have a fan on...not high but enough to help ventilate.

Keep trying to find the source of the 'leak' and filling gaps.

Is it an old house? Are the skirting boards all sound?

It’s pretty old yes. Built 1900.

The floor boards and skirting boards are ok but there are a good few gaps.

Is there a vent in the wall? Is it possible it's coming in the window?

No vent.

I know where it’s come from, it’s coming from under the skirting boards and floorboards.

Have a pedestal fan at the doorway to the room blowing air in - should create some positive air pressure which means air leaks outwards instead of inwards.

I would worry about this. You need to find block any gaps coming from next door.

Do you have carpets? Or bare boards?

Either way, seal all cracks in boards and between skirting and then lay laminate floor covering...from a roll. That will act as a more comprehensive cover.
