When and how did you introduce music?

Not a thread about a thread, but inspired by the thread about reading to babies.

I have an almost 2yo and I’m probably the least musical person there is. Not only do I have no ear/rhythm but I have some terrible memories of being forced to “do” music as a child. I’ve just about forced myself to sing to DD in lockdown, since there’s no baby class. She seems to really enjoy it and loves mimicking the radio, tapping out tunes and trying to sing along. What do I do next? I feel bad for not understanding that world.

When mine were toddlers they loved the Singing Kettle, which I think is now available on Youtube. Lots of easy kids songs with actions to copy. And many are quite funny too.
I regularly sang them lullabies as babies, and nursery rhymes too. Then got them simple musical instruments like xylophones and keyboards to experiment with. Going on to piano lessons at 5.
Any exposure to music is good for them, OP, whether specifically kids stuff, classical, pop, whatever. It all gives them rhythm and melody and a potential lifelong pleasure, whether playing, singing or just listening.

I'd introduce her to all the popular nursery rhymes and play them on car journeys (if you drive) and also throughout the day. Don't worry about whether your voice is good - she won't know and the more you practise the better it will get. You can also use songs to help her when she's older, eg play one song and in that time all the toys have to be tidied away.

For my son's first birthday we got him some percussion instruments and I'd just put music I liked on at home and encourage him to play (bang!) along! I confess that I can't stand most kids music so I've mainly just played him stuff I like. He loves Freddie Murcury lol! We did sing things like 'Head, shoulders, knees and toes' and 'Old MacDonald' but I've never been one to play kids songs in the car (bad enough having to watch kids TV) so I've just played my CDs or the radio. He always enjoys it. He's 5 now and is all about the dancing more than the instruments we got for him! So he has a good boogie to our favourite tunes and everybody wins!
