Bedtime story suggestions please

I used to read a story every night to ds’s for about 20-30 before lights off. Then, when Disney Plus came out we started watching the same amount of time of various super hero films. Now that they’re finally back at school again I’d like to read to them again instead but I’m stuck on what to go for.

Ds’s are 8 and 5. They both loved the first 2 Harry Potter books but then ds2 couldn’t follow the third one so ds1 read them independently instead. He’s also read all the Alex Rider, Horrible Histories, Percy Jackson and Train your Dragon book. And something about a child Sherlock but I can’t remember the name. I think all of these would be a bit too much for ds2 though.

Any suggestions for something that would interest them both? Or are they at such different levels now that I should just do 15 minutes each of separate books. Ds2 still can’t read freely so I just get him to tell me what the odd word says.

Ps I know it’s not great that we’ve been watching films before bed but working while dc are homeschooling has been hell. I work on the phone all day while I’m out of the office and I just needed a bit of time when I wasn’t talking!

Started reading DS2 Edge Chronicles when he was 5 and he still enjoys them at 11, so that might cover both. There's a whole Children's Books sections it might be worth posting in for more suggestions.

Lol depends on preferences but I started reading Terry Prachett at 8.

We had a system where the DC and I would take it in turn to choose the book when mine were that age. I read to them together ( smaller age gap and a DD and DD) we went through , Enid Blyton, Noel Streatfeild, Laura Ingalls wilder, Michael Morpurgo, Dick King - Smith, loads of Animal
ark type books etc. Only rules were that no one was allowed to read ahead on their own time and that once started a book couldn't be stopped. Having said that it all came to a bit of a halt when they were about 9 or 10 when DC3 entered our lives .i loved those times and we ended up covering a lot of ground story literature wise.

Both of mine liked some of the Roald Dahl books at that age.

Two of mine are similar ages & get bedtime stories together. Recent books:
Chrestomanci series
Harriet Hamster Princess series (these are brilliant & hilarious- fabulous pictures/cartoons too)
Narnia Series
Train to impossible places
First Aid for Faries series
Castle on Tuesdays series
Spiderwick Chronicles
Enchanted Forest Chronicles

I now realise we read a lot of series! I should try to add some stand alone books! And maybe some non fantasy... Grin

My sons 6 & 8 love Bear Grylls adventure series and order audios/books of them from library click & collect. We can also order 6 books where you choose age of child and were introduced to Guinea pigs online and Viking Vik (too easy for your DS8, good for 5-6). Might be worth checking your local library website?
