but not only am i wondering if it really is cheaper when you consider wash/dryig costs (its going to cost a lot up front too as i have tried terry towels havent a clue how to do them!) but am wondering if you also find you need to do lots of clothing changes too.

i got a tots bots trial, loved them, but babes trousers got wet each time too

They shouldn't leak onto clothes if the wrap is a good fit. Which wraps are you using?

FlameFromBonfire · 06/11/2007 12:48

Yup, with the right wrap you should have no leaks at all.

jobekal · 06/11/2007 14:26

i had the waterproof wrap, that came with the trial but if buying separately would rather have the terry, or bamboo or whatever it is wrap so it cane be tumble dried

Hmmm, the wrap is the bit which covers the cloth part of the nappy and stops it leaking onto clothes. It is usually made of PUL which is a type of baby-skin-firendly plastic. You can also buy wool or fleece wraps. PUL wraps don't tend to need to be tumble dried - often a quick wipe over with a dry cloth and a 10 min hang up somewhere dry will do.

Definitely agree your wraps weren't working for you. You really need a wrap with a good fit over the nappy itself or the wetness will wick directly from the nappy onto the clothes (leading to increased washing as you found ). You need to make sure none of the terry nappy is showing through the wrap. I would think that either your wrap was the wrong size for your litle one or it was a bad fit.

The older style totsbots wraps did not have leg gussets and leaked a lot more than the newer ones, but I have heard some poeple say that even the new ones are not as good as Motherease wraps. In short, I would suggest trying a Motherease Rikki wrap over some tots bots and see how you get on.

There are places on the internet where you can buy second hand cloth nappies if you are looking to keep costs down. Hope some of this helps.

shrinkingsagpuss · 06/11/2007 16:06

Where are you jobekai? Some counties have cloth nappy groups where you can trouble shoot, and and meet other parents using cloth nappies (sad but true)

Do persevere, it is worth it in the end esp if you use them for more than one child.. I can be all smug now when I pass the nappy aisle, knowing I don't need any.. well many.. I use disposables at night (i am SOOOO lazy!)

I had the same problem, using tots but I was advised to use motherease airflow wraps by the nappy lady, and touch wood have had no leaks since! good luck, I thought it would be hard work but other than an extra load of washing every other day, its not! keep an eye out for second hand tots, theyre just as good as new but a bit cheaper!

jobekal · 10/11/2007 08:15

sorry should have said i want to use fleece wraps but assume theyre likely to cause more wet trousers.

Wool wraps are better than fleece

tassisssss · 10/11/2007 20:21

to answer your original question re cost, IME it's definately cheaper providing you don't buy zillions of nappies, you don't tumble dry them all the time and you don't contiue using disps half the time!

if you end up using them for a second child, or you sell them on afterwards then you really make a big saving

also, if cost's an issue for you, do think about buying second hand - lots of bargains to be had

(FWIW we use totsbots (the traditional cotton ones) and motherease wraps)

Nemo2007 · 10/11/2007 20:26

hi
I tended to find fleece wraps leaked as the water wicks through. The PUL wraps were a lot better.

Flame · 10/11/2007 21:37

Wool absorbs and then evaporates, so less chance of wicking, just need slightly looser clothes than normal
