Teething - 4 months old

Baby has just turned 4 months and has been teething for the last few weeks. Today seems to have really gone up a level 😓
Red cheeks, loads of dribbling and lots of crying. Chewing hands/everything furiously! Would chew my finger for hours 😔
He’s cried on and off for the last couple of hours which is just not like him at all 😓 seems well otherwise. Still eating, nappies and temperature ok so I’m assuming it is his teeth!

Best teething tips?

Anbesol liquid and ibuprufen

Squish3 · 05/03/2021 19:55

@Letsallscreamatthesistene 👍🏻👍🏻 Fab, thanks! Any advice on hood teething toys etc?

@Letsallscreamatthesistene Anbesol is advertised for 5m+ 😓 I’ll run it by the health visitor to be safe 👍🏻

The nuby icy bite keys and Sophie la girafe are the best teethers we had. Also just because he’s going through this now doesn’t mean teeth are imminent! My DD was like this at 4 months but no teeth til about 8/9 months.

mamaof2girls · 05/03/2021 19:58

I use calpol on my 2 and nurafen if need to between doses off calpol! X

Yaty · 05/03/2021 20:03

Calpol, never found any teething rings/toys that my DD is interested in. Shes weaning now and cold foods like yogart help.

Squish3 · 05/03/2021 20:06

@Tier500 Thanks 😊 we have the keys but he struggles with holding them a little because they’re quite big! Gets frustrated when I help him 🙈🤣 I’ve heard a few good things about Sophie too so I’ll grab one 😊
I know they can start with sore gums etc really early and I really wasn’t expecting teeth for a few months at least but I’m pretty sure there is one beginning to push through on the bottom already! It’s so difficult to get a good look in their mouth 😅

@mamaof2girls @Yaty I’ve got Calpol here waiting incase he needs it. He’s gone down to sleep so I’ll see how he gets on 🤞🏼

My DS isnt interested in teething toys tbh

Vicky1989x · 05/03/2021 21:34

My DD started showing signs of teething at 4 months.. she’s 10 months now and still no teeth 🤣 I can see them, just not wanting to push through!

Nelsons teething powders have worked well though! My friend swears by Dentinox teething gel, but I use Anbesol.

Thatwentbadly · 05/03/2021 21:51

Nurofen is better than calpol for teething. There is nothing in teething powders which reduce pain except a bit of sugar. Anbesol liquid is amazing but it shouldn’t be used before 5 months. A baby toothbrush is good to chew on.

Thatwentbadly · 05/03/2021 21:52

Obviously closely supervised.

Seeline · 05/03/2021 21:54

Teething powders worked brilliantly with both of mine. Calpol when really bad

FolkSongSweet · 06/03/2021 08:57

My best friend is a pharmacist - she says teething powders are basically placebo for parents. They don’t have any active ingredients. Nurofen or calpol if it’s really bad but try not to give too often.

Squish3 · 06/03/2021 10:17

Thanks for all the recommendations 😊👍🏻 I don’t like to give medication unless it’s really needed but I have a few things in incase he needs them! Seems to be getting by with chilled teething toys at the moment 🤞🏼

Well they definitely helped both mine who started teething at around 3 months. I'm not sure a placebo would work on a 3 month old.

My daughter had her first two teeth at 4.5 months, 6 teeth by 6 months, shes 8 months now and got two more coming through! Teething is the absolute worst and I've not really found anything that makes it better other then paracetamol and ibuprofen. She has a teething blanket by nuby which she uses on and off, plus the monkey teether things. We tried Ashton and parsons powder, anbesol and all sorts and they didn't really do anything. Once they're through the gum though it's much better for them, poor little mites.

FolkSongSweet · 06/03/2021 17:52

@Seeline that’s why I (/my friend) said placebo for parents - ie they make the parents feel better/feel like they’re doing something. They don’t do anything for babies.

And that's why I disagreed because they definitely did something for my two. They stopped crying for a start! They didn't if we used the gels, or teethers or fed them etc.

FolkSongSweet · 07/03/2021 16:03

@Seeline have a read of this. The problem is you have no idea what would have happened if you hadn’t given them. On the plus side they’re not harmful, just a waste of money.

Ashton & Parsons teething granules worked well for DS and definitely gave him some relief.

If he wasn't settling with a cold teething toy and granules, we'd give paracetamol, and if that didn't help (only occasionally) ibuprofen.

Anbesol is effective but should be an absolute last resort because it contains lidocaine and isn't recommended for babies.
