Dropped my 4m old

Yesterday, I went to pick up my 4 month old (5months on Thursday) from his play mat.

At that moment hey duggee came on the TV and he arched his back so hard to try watch it I lost my grip and dropped him. He landed on the carpet and has the tiniest mark on his eyebrow. He cried for a little bit stopped when I cuddled him - think I was more distraught than him.

I rang 111 who basically told me I was a terrible parent for dropping him and I needed to get him assessed at urgent care immediately. I went, the doctor said it was a 'very minor' head injury. Checked him out said he's behaving normally, moving his arms and legs etc and looked absolutely fine. He sent us home and wasn't worried.

Now though, my anxiety is through the roof. He said he had to tell the paediatric liaison team about the injury due to his age. And now I cannot stop panicking I'm going to have social services etc turn up at my door wanting to take my little boy away for me making a mistake. I'm terrified they're going to ring tomorrow.

Little lad is fine today. Giggling away and having a good time but I am so anxious, has anyone else had an experience like this?

@MouthAche

OP. You said if it happened again you would wait and see and not go straight away...

Never wait and ‘see’ if you have dropped your child.

Hello,

What I meant by this is I would wait and see if he was to over fall or bang any part of his body.

Whilst you might not agree with waiting and seeing, I am not going to take him to hospital every single time he has a bump or fall, or I'd be in there every day when he's toddling!

I do completely understand if you meant if I continuously dropped him to go to a&e - which I would. But I haven't dropped him since, am super careful all the time, and it was a horrible one off incident. Thanks :)

Thank you everyone! No SS banging at my door and little lad is totally fine. Not even a slight bruise in the end. Been giggling away all week and crawling (flopping) himself about the living room

When my son was 3 months we were at a playgroup and my nephew who was 2 was walking with a toy to show him. He tripped on the mat and the toy came flying out his hand and on DS's head. He screamed for about a minute and I was mortified it all happened so quickly. I took him to minor injuries who said they couldn't see him because he's under 1 and I needed to go to A&E. We did and thankfully he was okay. The next morning I had the HV phone me and asked what happened because they have to report it because of their age. Asked me what happened and they left it at that as the hospital could see he was a well cared for baby. My nephew was mortified (me too) and it was so scary. But if your child has any sort of head injury always see a doctor OP.

I don’t know any parents who haven’t had a minor mishap or baby rolled off a bed, sofa etc. Hospital will contact your Health Visitor and they will just give you a call to check in with you. Nothing to be worried about. It’s procedure to contact HV every time a child is seen in A&E.
