Autism worries in my 12 month old

Advice needed .... my 12 mo is a baby but we have all noticed she only responds to her name sometimes, seems uninterested in playing with people and constantly bangs her legs against the floor. She only says mum mum and dada and doesnt seem to even register when we are talking to her. She moving around furniture fine but doesn’t want to walk just yet. I have scared myself by reading things about autism and some of the signs that can be autism. What do I do? Is this something I should be worried about? feeling a little lost!??!?

I think that sounds pretty normal....??

Does she smile? Do you get eye contact sometimes? (I’m not a medic but if she’s doing those then a GP would probably wave you away from my experience .)

I could have write your post 6 months ago. In fact I probably have after falling down the Google rabbit hole... 🤔

Long story short, my DD that had been cruising since 7-8 months walked independently at 14 months when she was darn well good and ready.

She also wasn't babbling much (if at all) back then. Now, we've got a handful of words (daddy and oh dear most prominent) and animal sounds (quack!). She's probably a little behind on speech, but I'm no longer worried.

As for playing, independent play is wonderful, and if anything should be encouraged. Besides, actually playing with people doesn't come for a long time yet. Banging her legs on the floor sounds like she finds it fun, nothing more. She'll probably stop when she discovers a new thing to do.

I'm yet to meet a baby that responds to their name every time. Or even most of the time. Especially when their attention is fixated on something. If you're overly worried, I would have her hearing checked. As a PP asked, does she smile and make eye contact with you at all?

Tbh there is always a chance she could be autistic, but everything you've listed sounds very much in the realms of normal. Plus, at 12 months, it's far too early to tell. She's got a lot of growing and developing still to do.

When do you have your 12m HV check OP?

Ellava21 · 26/02/2021 12:59

Thank you so much everyone ... HV was most unhelpful but I have got a hearing test booked. I think I’m over thinking and most definitely fallen down the google rabbit hole!!! Thank you all again x

You can't be blamed for overthinking when all you have is Google. HV support has been virtually non-existant, and you won't have been able to interact with other babies the same age as DD to compare. I'm guessing you're also a FTM, so it's all brand new to you to boot.

Once baby + toddler groups open back up, you'll realise just how normal yours is. Except more perfect. Smile You'll also see how wide the range of normal actually is.

Hope the hearing test goes well. ❤️

Well no one can say that she doesn’t have Autism but certainly, at 12 months, no one can say that she does. Autism is a specific diagnosis, not just a catch-all term for developmentally delayed. Her development does not ring alarm bells at the moment, but you should certainly keep an eye on her.
