'Tense' face in DD this week...

Hi, I have had a phone call from DD(6)'s teacher. At first it reminded me of that scene in Parenthood where they are discussing their sons 'tense face'...

She told me that DD has repeatedly been switching off and losing concentration this week, not in a naughty way, but just staring down at her work and pulling a face (like a frowny sort of thing, and screwing up her mouth) I hav seen her do it also when we were doing spellings. I felt really guilty as I said 'That's a funny face!' and she got all tearful and stroppy...

She has been through a lot recently with being put on meds for a heart problem and having to go in an ambulance from school, v. scary. She is pretty healthy right now, and doesn't talk about her problem and is enjoying p.e. again. But why is she doing this face in class suddenly? She doesn't really have any problems with spelling or reading ect but justseems to not be paying attention. Could it be to do with the medication (she is on flecainide).

I tried talking to her about it just now but she denies it and runs off to play again! 6 yr olds!

do you think she is feeling a bit sensitive about the fact that she feels different to other children. They all just want to be the same at this age don't they...

I am sure it won't last long and could she maybe just catch up at home with you where she feels her happiest.

Thanks for the reply. I think maybe that's it. Although we have let her return to sports and things, the other children have been told a little bit about the problem so I wonder if they are asking her or even teasing... probably not though.

Maybe I should spend more time with the spellings and catching up so that she doesn't feel so pressured.
Anyone else have any views on this? x

Good idea - but as far as I can tell her eyes are fine, she was tested about 4 months ago at school. And no frowning when watching telly ect.

might be slightly long sighted - then telly would be fine but close reading not.

I am one of those people whose sight SUDDENLY deteriorated aged 6 - over a few weeks - so I always think of it :-)

hi, my dd has been doing something similar, when under stress. She blanks out, sort of isnt there. Does a weird staring face, when almost looks put on.I took her to a consulatant, who said it maybe be a slight seizure, but to just keep an eye on it.
I have no idea about the meds your d is on?

My dd hasn't got epilepsy, which is what I was thinking, but maybe you could see someone ustin case. I am sure its stress related tho. take care

my dd is 5 btw, and it started at her dads, over a few months, never with me, and i put that down to less upset at home than at dads.
