What's this / Is this normal? (pic of baby navel area attached)

Hi all,

DS's cord has fallen off (after 5 weeks!) but there appears to be a bit left in his belly button - I've attached a pic.

Is this normal? Will it just dry out and fall off in time. It's partially dry/crusty and wet looking but it's not leaking /gunky. The Dr looked at his belly button a few days ago as I was concerned it was still attached for so long. He said it doesn't look infected and to look out for redness of the skin around the belly button and a fever nut otherwise just leave it be. It doesn't seem to bother DS.

Just wondering if anyone has had the same and what the outcome was? Thanks Smile

Looks like it might be a granuloma, but not normally that mucky looking

You can treat this yourself or your GP can apply silver nitrate to help

Don't worry lots of babies have this and it's treated fairly easy

Hi,

Google umbilica granuloma. Our little one had it but it was a bit more pink/red than yours. The NHS website says to put a bit of salt solution on it...we did so and it dried up and dropped off in a few days and now his is perfectly normal. Leave it a little longer and maybe check back in with the GP just to be sure before doing anything.

Thanks both! Health visitor & GP also confirmed it's a granuloma today. It's actually gotten smaller / less gunky on its own since I originally posted. GP has recommended salt water treatment for 5 days to see if this also helps. If not they've said they will prescribe antibiotic cream - no mention of silver nitrate but will ask if the salt water doesnt do the trick! Smile
