Hi all
What is best way for naming school uniform etc?
Good old fashioned sew on ones or are there easier stamps or iron ons that you find easier.
Many thanks.

I just use a sharpie.

Stickers from places like nametag.com. Go through the wash just fine. I use them on everything - uniform, shoes, water bottle etc.

Sharpie pen. There’s usually dedicated space on the labels and, if not, there’s enough white space next to washing instructions. As a last resort, I just write inside the neck.
Also, go back in time so you give dc the same initial to ease hand-me-downing!

I used to use iron on ones from easy2name. Now I use a fine laundry marker instead

Iron on labels (I put on first name, surname, my mobile number) plus matching name stickers for water bottles, lunch boxes, and other take in stuff (eg on the neck of DS2’s guitar). Neither comes off after multiple cycles in washing machine (iron on labels) or dishwasher (stickers on water bottles).

The iron on labels are so good, in fact, that they’re a problem once the DCs have grown out of the clothes as they don’t come off! I always ask the company nicely for some blank labels to iron over the named ones for when we’re done with the clothes which they’ve always included for free. I can then put them in a charity bin or school’s second hand shop knowing names and phone number isn’t being spread far and wide.

I only put the surname for this reason, though it helps that they are the only kids in the school (and likely country) with their surname.

CautiousBlonde · 21/02/2021 14:15

Just put surname (unless you have an only)

Just write on tags with a biro. I have used the iron on labels before too.

I use sharpie on shirt labels and it came off in a hot wash and stained other parts of the shirts.

I sew them on using a sewing machine with matching thread for the garment. The labels are pre-cut in any colour you choose, I had a different colour for each child. They were bright and easy to spot, so a child in primary picking up a jumper would instantly see a bright orange label at the neckline and know it wasn't theirs.

Labels are from wunderlabel.co.uk/woven-labels/

Sadly there are a few parents out there who will cut off a care label of a jumper which has the school logo on to remove the name of the rightful owner. Mine were sewn in so yes you can still cut them out but it leaves the sides sewn to the jumper, therefore you would have to unpick the sewing.

But even if you use a biro or sharpie you are much more likely for your child to be reunited with their items. Please also label coats, they fall off the peg and get kicked round the cloakroom. It helps me put it back on the right peg.
