Anyone ever had problems with Nutramigen formula for CMPA?

Hi,

My son is 11 weeks old and has been suffering for a while and on Wednesday we were prescribed nutramigen for CMPA. He started it Wednesday evening and since yesterday he has done nothing but cry, pump all the time cause he’s full of gas and he’s pooing loads. He’s seems so uncomfortable and he’s had that many poos his bum has got sore and is bleeding.

Has anyone had this milk and had problems with it? I don’t know whether to continue with it and hope it’s just the adjustment phase or stop it?

The protiens in nutramigen are not as fully broken down as in pur amino. (think that is the difference between them other than cost) It may be that your wee one might need it.

How are you making up the bottle? You shouldn't use 70 degree water. Will destroy the good stuff and might make it clumpy and harder to digest.

Sympathies though, it is foul stuff. Pur amino is nicer to prepare and give!

I’ve been making it up using boiled water that’s cooled to room temperature as the tin says to do so.
Just seems to be getting worse with every feed and is very unhappy.

Yeah speak to the doctor. Could it be silent reflux if no spewing? The nutramigen and pur amino are thinner so sometimes it is harder for them to keep it down. Mine certainly spewed loads with the nutramigen. We got pit on pur amino because of projectile spew, but were alao advised to put carobel thickener in the bottle. That stopped the spew and seemes to make him more comfortable.

With hindsight i think the spewing and discomfort caused by the nutramigen was down to the thinness of it (and in fact actually doubt it was cmpa at all, but thats another thing)

Downside is carobel can cause constipation but we gave the odd laxido and were told that an oz of cooled. Boiled water would be ok too.

As PPs said, you need to make sure it’s Nutramigen Puramino, rather than regular nutramigen. And it is a very thin formula, so lots of babies need carobel - both of mine did and it made a world of difference once I added it. My paedetrician told me that carobel was essential for babies on puramino!

Because of constipation, I found it better to add less carobel and let it thicken in the fridge over several hours rather than adding the recommended amount. It’s trial and error, but 1 scoop per 6 Oz bottle worked well for both of mine, along with a size 2 or 3 teat.

I also added an extra ounce of water to 2-3 bottles per day to reduce constipation. We actually needed lactulose for a few weeks when we first started carobel but then their digestive systems adjusted.

We Already use Carobel as he's always brought a lot of milk back up. He's on reflux treatment to as initially they said all his symptoms were reflux but then his skin started reacting and he'd tried different reflux medications with nothing helping. I do definitely think there is reflux there.

It is just the normal nutramigen, to be honest the gp said it was the only one they know of to prescribe so she just went with that. So I may have speak about that with them.

Thank you for the tips
