Can one have too many cuddly toys?

As there's already a thread going on about 'too many toys in your house?' I thought I'll do a spin off and ask: Can one have too many cuddly toys?

I'm a major culprit and after having a tidy up in dd's room today decided we definitely have WAY too many! But they're all soooooo cute ...

Let me see... teddie bears, Pooh bears and Tiggers in varying sizes, doggies, tigers, lions, cats, 7 hippos and a giant moose (admitteldly they're mine - and how sad is that!?), basically you name the animal we're bound to have it!

Now trying to decide which ones to 'give up for adoption for a nominal price', especially whilst dd isn't looking. She's bound to rekindle her friendship if she suddenly sees some of the toys put to one side...

Yes - you can have too many! We ended up putting loads in the loft (in case we had another baby - which in fact we now are!), giving some to charity, and there's still loads in dd's room. Plus, people keep giving her new ones!

misdee · 28/10/2004 15:44

i have alos put a couple of bags of soft toys in the loft. most are gifts from people, and are really cute, but i couldnt copw with seeing so many soft toys in one room.

On a sad note they can aggravate allergies and ashma. Freezing them helps though as it kills the bugs but I don't know anyone who's done this? I suppose putting them outside in bin bags in winter may do similar?

dd is lucky re allergies and actually doesn't even touch most of the cuddlies hence the culling.

if you get a frost then it should have same effect as freezer. However as toys will be bunched together might not be quite so effective. Then again who's got room in their freezer for them?

Never been able to have them around cos of allergies.

pepsi · 28/10/2004 16:24

Yes weve got loads, my ds wasnt bothered about them when he was little but we kept hold of them for when dd arrived, she loves cuddly toys but as a result she gets bought loads and yes we have far to many but I wouldnt know which ones to part with as they do now seem to play with them all....if they are out. I tend to rotate them and keep out the favourites and now just tell people no more cuddly toys.

Bozza · 28/10/2004 16:30

Yes DS has got tonnes that are still in DD's room because he's not interested but DD has also been bought loads.

princesspeahead · 28/10/2004 17:05

yes. every so often we go through them and have a discussion about which ones we are going to give to children who don't have any, which usually produces a full bin-bag worth to send to a charity shop. some how that doesn't even make a dent. I don't know where they all come from - we don't buy them, people don't really give them once your child is over about 2, but still they multiply. HOW?

jojo38 · 28/10/2004 17:19

One day you will walk in to your childs bedroom and they will have all disappeared.

This is what happened to my ds, the eldest. Now its cds, paper, posters etc. No teddies

Youngest ds has a load of the beanie things and teds but they are gradually making their way under the bed.

They grow out of them so don't worry.

handlemecarefully · 28/10/2004 23:33

Yes - they are my pet hate. DD only seems to play (very briefly) with 4 or 5 of them but has >30. Have advised relatives that there is a soft toy embargo this Christmas.

yoyo · 29/10/2004 00:03

My two DDs love their cuddlies ( a whole 4 ft by 2 ft toy box full) and DS loves his too! Would love to downsize but fear that I would be splitting the family apart (mediation might be necessary).

miam · 29/10/2004 00:09

Yes, yes and yes. I dont know how many times I have thrown out/given to charity etc millions of cuddly toys, but they seem to reproduce at a remarkable rate! They are taking over our house.... could rentokil deal with this?

MrsBigD · 29/10/2004 07:58

I also have the suspicion that they multiply secretly. Have to remember not to feed them after midnight... anybody remember those rather bad (in retrospect) movies? GREMLINS!

OP posts:
miam · 29/10/2004 08:38

Yes MrsD - are those the same gremlins that come in in the middle of the night and trash my house, so that when I get up in the morning the place looks like a bomb hit it, despite my having tidied up the previous evening??? (They've been here again this morning )

miam - same here... have a feeling dd is the gremlin though as she sometimes gets up before us... pitter patter pitter patter crash!

To kill the creepies in your cuddly toys wrap clingfilm all around them (tightly), and leave in freezer for a few days.

So I was advised by the vintage teddy bear shop.

CP · 30/10/2004 20:02

I shudder to think what creepies are in dd's softies - my mother dragged all my old ones over from South Africa on her last visit! Now that really is a waste of luggage space!!!
