1 year old eating

My baby will be 1 next week and 5 months down the line from weaning we are still struggling. He's always been really fussy with his food and some days he will eat loads and other days barely anything. The only thing he really enjoys eating is pasta and some form of sandwich for dinner. He had covid end of December and once he was better his eating was absolutely amazing. Since then he's had another cold which he's almost over and his eating has taken a nose dive. Yesterday we barely touched his tea yet when me and husband had our salmon he was all over it and loved it. Today I made him his own small salmon fillet with some avocado on toast and once he had a few mouthful he pushed everything away. His day starts like this
5am feed approx 7oz and back to sleep
830am ish 1 weetabix or shreddies or cherios
1030 snack. Normally a banana
1230 ish sandwich and fruit or yoghurt
1330 ish 7oz bottle
1630 ish tea of some sort
1900 8oz bottle

Do you think he may be ready to drop his 2pm bottle. Anyone have any advice or similar experiences. Maybe tell me all this is okay and I'm doing a cracking job. 🙁

Eating more one day and then less other days is totally normal, especially at this age so please don't worry about that. If he's refusing to eat, it's safe to assume he's just not hungry Smile

And yes, it does sound like a good time to stop the afternoon bottle. From 12 months he only needs 10 floz a day of full fat milk and you can include milk in cereals in that amount.

My DS’s appetite was all over the place at this age, if it wasn’t a cold it was teething or just plain old stubbornness; he just didn’t have the concentration span to sit and eat for long. He really did love stealing food off our plates though, and would happily top up when daddy got home from work even though just half an hour earlier he may have refused to eat anything on his own plate.

Mine is also a pasta loving toddler. My advice is just keep trying to tempt him with different things and have leftover pasta waiting in the wings ready to zap in the microwave. I literally own every shape and size of pasta on the market. I’ll usually cook a lot of pasta and keep some back plain in case he won’t eat whatever topping i provide. He will cheerfully feed himself the plain pasta while I attempt to sneak in spoonfuls of the topping in between mouthfuls. Doesn’t always work but works often enough to satisfy me.

It’s very versatile, what’s not to like about pasta? Carbonara, pasta with chorizo and red peppers, bolognese, pasta with tuna and sweetcorn, macaroni cheese, pasta with tomato and vegetables, pasta shapes with chicken and broccoli, lasagne, tinned Heinz pasta on buttered toast... and then, a revelation, I discovered DS likes egg noodles, and rice noodles, so now he’ll eat teriyaki salmon noodles and vegetable stir fry.

Hell, I even made plain pasta for breakfast once!

You’re doing a cracking job, don’t be disheartened. One day he will may like one thing, the next he may refuse to eat it. They are fickle creatures at this age, the main thing is to be very calm and positive and never make food time a battle.

My DS is very much like this; i worried a bit as my older child was such a good eater but Ive relaxed about it a bit now. I still give milk mid morning and I’ll be swapping to cows milk soon as I figure he probably needs a bit extra to make up for not always eating so much

Yeah, don't fret.

Some days they'll lick a piece of toast all day, other days you'll wonder where they put it all :)

TooMinty · 17/02/2021 20:18

He might like it if you all ate together? Could you have an early tea so you are all eating the same/similar meal together? You saying he was all over your salmon is making me wonder!

I’d drop the middle bottle and see if that helps. You could offer a bigger bottle in the morning.

Mine turns 1 next week and we do this -

7 AM - 9oz
8 AM - Breakfast (porridge with fruits, pancakes, scrambled eggs, toast, avocado etc)
11:30 - Lunch (main & fruit/yogurt)
16:30 - Dinner (main & fruit / pud)
18:45 - Bedtime we offer 8oz but he usually takes around 5/6oz

He’ll have a couple snacks during the day too, cheese, oat bars, cucumber sticks etc.

14 oz of milk is plenty for his age, it may help him build up an appetite. He sounds within the realms of normal. Just try and keep offering a range off food, a multivit and don’t stress

Fatas · 17/02/2021 23:53

Oh and I’d deffo be dropping the 5.30 feed and not the 2pm one!

doireallyneedaname · 18/02/2021 08:25

Oh yes, as someone said about vitamins - if you drop the 1pm bottle, baby needs a daily vitamin (you give them when baby is taking under 500ml formula per day)

We use this one -

Thanks guys. I'd love him to drop his 5am bottle but he definitely needs that one. He feeds like he's been starved for 24 hours. He goes right back to sleep afterwards no problems. My husband doesn't normally get home till around 530 so occasionally we eat together depending how his day has fallen with his other meals and naps. @doireallyneedaname I've noticed you leave around 5 hours between two meal times. Perhaps that's where I am going wrong perhaps he isn't overly hungry. I might trial it today and still give him the milk around 2pm and maybe look at feeding him his tea around 530ish when my husband is home. I love us all eating together. Thanks so much for all your comments. In the least selfish way possible it makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone x

Yep! He will usually still have an afternoon nap around 2pm so by the time he wakes up it’s almost his dinner time. He will have a few snacks in between though, as mentioned :)

We tried a few different routines and timings before we got to this one. My issue was that baby started refusing most of his night time bottle last month, but after a lot of reading I saw that 350-400ml at this age is fine :)

Good luck!

Fatas · 18/02/2021 11:12

12 oz or 350mm as a minimum is fine. A lot of bits don’t have calcium in anyway and they don’t need to drink as much if they’re also eating cheese and yoghurt at one. My current three year old would only drink an 8 oz cup in the morning. Then he had milk added to porridge and cheese and yoghurt during the day. Too much milk/calcium is also not good as it prevents the absorption of iron which is an essential vit in itself.

I would question whether he needs his 5.30 feed. My 12 month old was drinking like he was starving at 4 in the morning, until suddenly he didn’t. A lot is habit, comfort, needing to get back to sleep with milk. Just an idea if you ever want your sleep back. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Id have been pleased if my baby ate that when he was that age. You're doing really well! I've also been told that they might tank up one day and then not be hungry the next....I was also told to look at what they eat over the whole week rather than the day. My boy improved when he went to nursery.

Couldntthinkofausername24 · 18/02/2021 18:54

I've kept the 2pm feed today and extended the time inbetween his 2pm feed and his tea and it was great success. He ate a massive plate of fish pie I made. So pleased and hoping it wasn't just a fluke x

Good news! If he likes that then fish cakes might also go down well and are handy for batch cooking/freezing 😊

Fatas · 19/02/2021 15:49

I find them handier to buy from the shop 🤣
