Cot Bumpers

I know that they're not recommended, but what are people's thoughts on mesh bumpers for a cot? I worry when I move my son into his he'll poke his arms and legs through and hurt himself.

Id rather risk a broken limb than a suffocated baby.

DriftGames · 17/02/2021 15:13

That came across very stern, but honestly, they're not safe and they're not worth the risk. My daughter is 15m and gets her arms and legs everywhere at night but she shuffles her way out. Sleeping bags help too, as they can't separate their legs to poke them through easily.

I wouldn't use

Yeah give them a miss

My son had a beautiful Moses basket. At 4 months decided he could fiddle the bows and found the cotton side fallen past his cheek onto his ear. He was taken out and the whole thing ripped apart and the hood taken off. Might seem a bit extreme but I wouldn't have slept otherwise. He literally slept like Moses in a plain basket

Not worth the risk

AtLastEarwax · 17/02/2021 15:18

The worst thing is my friend suffocated her baby by co sleeping and whilst sobbing she described how she found her and the colour she was and everything and if I apply it to my son with something over his face in that Moses basket it makes me feel physically sick

Sorry I know that's off topic

Findahouse21 · 17/02/2021 15:20

Absolutely not worth the risk. Only an empty cot is safe

TrimmedMyBush · 17/02/2021 15:22

My DD got her leg caught in her cot, she was crying and I yelled for my DH to come help us. Wasn’t nice but she was fine.

I’d have that over anything else. No cot bumpers. I can’t believe they can even be sold still.

NerrSnerr · 17/02/2021 15:28

Empty cot is safest cot. Have a read of Justice for Preston Facebook page. It's not worth any kind of risk, the mesh bumpers still pose a risk.

tryinghardest · 17/02/2021 15:31

Thank you everyone. My friend was saying I was being over paranoid when I said they're dangerous so I was questioning myself.

I agree with pp , I think it’s awful that they are still sold .

Wheresmyfuckingphone · 17/02/2021 15:46

I've never heard of a child who has been seriously hurt by poking their legs through the bars. I have heard of babies suffocating on the bumpers though.
Honestly, I think my babies got their legs stuck once each and yelled until we freed them and that was it. It's not worth getting bumpers for.

Bluebelle41 · 17/02/2021 15:48

With cot bumpers it isn’t only about the material but also the fastening, as that is often how a baby injured themselves. I’m glad that you’ve asked here @tryinghardest and that you feel comfortable with your decision.

edgeware · 17/02/2021 15:52

For reference my son never once got arms or legs stuck in the bars! Not once.

Firststariseetonight · 17/02/2021 16:08

My daughters never got limbs caught in the cot bars (as said above sleeping bags help), but the youngest has twice got her arm caught in the slats on the back of the dining chair. I have no plans to cover the chairs! Unfortunately cot bumpers are not safe (apart from the suffocation risk, young children can use them as steps to climb out of the cot). Trapped limbs are unpleasant at the time but it only lasts a few minutes and is very unlikely to lead to any kind of injury.
