Duvet in the cot

I posted on another mums group about using a thin cover less duvet in my child’s cot bed (21 months) and also cot pillow. I got told it’s really unsafe as they can’t kick them off as easy/get tangled up. Trouble is I can’t use sleep sacks as the size for there age is too small and the next larger size is to big. So does anyone know if this is true is it really that unsafe ? What about it I tucked one side right under the mattress ?

Oh gosh yes. At 21 months they can manage a
Duvet and pillow

These people who say you can't are bonkers

@hassletassle honestly, don't waste your money. Get a cot bed duvet on Amazon. Those sleeping bags cost over £50. The child can't sleep in a bag forever

Agreed. What do all these 2/3/4 year olds sleeping in sleeping bags do when they want to get up in the night for a wee?

@cautiouscovidity my 21mo doesn't get up at night for a wee! My 3.5 year is in a toddler bed with no sides and a duvet... she doesn't get up for wees at night either.

@hassletassle Fair enough. Mine did need to get up for a wee from when they were potty trained at 2. Not every night, but now and again. Or first thing in the morning, they'd get up and go to the bathroom. That would've been tricky if they were in a sleeping bag.
We used sleeping bags until they stopped using the cot (18 months with DC1 and 24 months with DC2), then they had a toddler bed with pillows and duvets - tuck in well so they don't kick them off (thinking more for comfort than any safety concerns at this age).

I didn’t want to take the sides off the cot untill I have too as I’ve heard they can just get up all through the night.

The sleep sack I got doesn’t have poppers and is age 3-6 yrs the neck does seem big but doesn’t go over his head, the arm holes are huge too. He is on the 99th centile & the 18-36 months ones are tiny and don’t fit.

It is a cot bed sized cover & he is in a large cot bed . it does seem bigger than the cot I guess one side of it would hang out without the side on but il just tuck it under then, thank you.

Or they might not. DS never has.... And he's been in his own bed of some form of another since 14 mo and that was 2.5 years agio.

UK advice is that duvets and pillows are fine from 12 months. This is absolutely fine!

Some countries have more conservative advice which might be why you get mixed responses online, especially if it's an international group.

DS1 had a toddler pillow and duvet from 18 months as he hated sleeping bags, however stayed in a cot until almost 3yrs as he never tried to climb out and was happy. We moved him when he started to night toilet train. Never had an issue with him getting tangled in a duvet, kicking it off was the only issue but at least in a cot it didn’t fall in the floor.

Wow thanks sooo much for these replies, they’ve honestly helped me so much. He’s had a duvet for a few days now in the cot and I haven’t worried at all after reading your comments! I don’t think il take the side of yet as I don’t want to risk ruining his sleep but once we’re potty training I will.

Try this to make yourself feel better: when he’s awake and out of the cot, put the duvet on his head as a game. You’ll quickly see he can wriggle out from under it no problem!
