FTM baby trying to sit up

I'm a FTM and I'm wondering how do babies generally learn to sit up? My DD is 4 months old and everytime she's on me, she's pulling herself up to a sitting position but her chin on her chest, which freaks me out a bit. She only does this when she's leaning against my knees and bum on my stomach in a slanted position. She's started to try on the bouncer but I'm clueless on what I can do to help her without hurting her/if she's not ready. She hasn't even rolled yet, although she's got as far as on her side from back to belly. We do have a sit me up by fisher price but she can't last long in it before she starts getting fussy. Any advice would be great!

Usually to start you have to sit them up and they sort of balance for 10 seconds and then fall over. This usually isn’t until around 6 months. It takes them quite a while usually (once they start pushing up and crawling) to be able to sit themselves up. It just sounds a bit too soon. At that age, it’s more about practicing rolling and tummy time.

@mindutopia that's what I thought! I know that some babies start at 4 months but she couldn't even roll yet. It's like she's trying everything at once atm😂 thanks that's took some pressure off my mind

My little rolled a couple of times at 4.5 months then didn't roll again until 5.5 month it must have suddenly clicked and now she rolls all the time.
Also around 4.5 months she started to sit with support, holding her hands or propping her up. She's 6 months now and over the last week or two has become much sturdier and can sit for short periods on her own.
Between 5 and 6 months the difference in what she can do is huge!!

Not all babies roll before sitting – mine was desperate to sit up (the better to wave toys around), and so sat up early, around 4.5 months, and was able to do it for long periods surprisingly quickly. She apparently wasn't bothered about rolling, and finally did that just after 6 months.

When she was learning to sit, I mostly just let her sit on my lap, giving her as much or as little support as she needed or wanted at that moment. I did try sitting her on the floor with a nursing cushion for support a few times, but she wasn't particularly keen (cramped her toy flailing style).

I didn’t bother teaching them. When they were ready they sat up on their own. Obviously you can put them in jumperoo, high chair etc so they get used to sitting supported and eventually rather sit without support. No need to force it

My first sat at 4m, before she rolled. My second, I can't remember when she rolled but she sat at 5m. They all do things in their own way and time.

This is all really reassuring to hear! I think I'm too much into these milestones and panic if she misses one/does it too early. I'll just let her go her own pace and if she sits before rolling then it happens

Babies don't know about these 'milestones', it's a good idea to have some idea if they're really late but don't stress about it, and I don't think there's any benefit in trying to help them sit before they can do it for themselves.
I've no idea how they learn to sit. Mine just did it at almost exactly 6 months and looked so darned pleased with herself! (One of the rare times we actually got photos of a 'milestone'.)
