Toys to help my baby stand

My baby doesn't stand. He will bear weight on his legs for a few seconds whilst being supported by me, but then gives up and just bends his legs again.

Are there any toys I can buy to help encourage him? I've tried standing him up next to the sofa so he can put his arms on the sofa whilst straightening his legs, but our sofa is very high and it's not really working. He has a jumperoo but that hasn't been much use either, other than encouraging him to plant his feet I suppose.

He's nearly 10 months so I'm getting a bit worried.

Anyone?

Forgot to say that I haven't got a walker as my HV says they're not recommended. Not sure why. Thanks.

Really, don’t worry. He’ll be doing things at his own pace and you don’t need anything special to help him. One of my sons walked at 10 months but his brother didn’t walk until he was 16 months. They’re all different!

I don't know - she just said she doesn't recommend them and I didn't ask why! Wish I had now. I've just had a quick google though and they do seem to be controversial - banned in Canada apparently!!

Let him take his time. They need time to build up strength and balance. I was so worried why my daughter wouldn’t crawl and just sat like a pudding. I looked into it and realised that while she could sit it was because I put her down in the sitting position and she stayed balanced. I went back to basics and always put her down on her back. She was furious! but within 24 hrs had worked how to roll over and push herself up to sitting and within days was crawling. So let him take his time and don’t force. And I’d avoid anything which makes them stand unnaturally like a Walker.

WeAllHaveWings · 09/02/2021 15:35

Honestly he doesn't need encouraged, he will do it when he is ready, when his little legs are strong enough, and he sees something out of his reach he wants to break touch.

At 10 months ds was barely crawling, he only starting standing holding on with no support for a couple of weeks before he walked at just over a year.

One thing my sil found hard with her kids when they were nearly walking was hard floors, they are too young for supportive shoes and couldn't get a good grip with socks. Carpets or rugs make them feel more secure when they are ready.

Mylittlesandwich · 09/02/2021 15:39

If you want to get a Walker then this kind is fine. The ones that aren't so helpful are the ones that enclose them in a plastic circle.
DS is 14 months, only just learned to crawl and pull himself up on EVERYTHING. He'll do it in his own time, I know it's easier said than done but try not to worry.

Walkers don't teach them to stand up and get their balance when they are ready. They put them in a walking position they and their legs and brains just aren't ready for yet.

Honestly you dont need to worry, enjoy it while they are still at ground level and not getting into everything. Start looking to make sure your house is child proof/corners padded, TV cant be pulled over, drawers fingers will be trapped in etc, where you are going to put your coffee up high etc for when they do as it wont be long!

Janet Lansbury has excellent stuff on this topic and just generally allowing babies and children to develop at their own pace wherever possible.

My baby is 10 months, sometimes cruises but mainly balances whilst holding on to stuff. Im not at all worried. Whats made you concerned?

BiBabbles · 09/02/2021 19:22

Around that age, my children who were pulling up to stand seemed to prefer a cube pouffe footstool that they could grip onto and then later loved to push around. Either that or my skirts/legs which could be awkward...

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/02/2021 19:29

Walkers they sit in aren't great and a safety hazard near stairs etc. The Vtec one was popular when DD was little. You really don't need to worry though, unless there's some reason to think there's a problem with his mobility hell walk in his own time, you don't see any teenagers crawling to school.

I remember being worried as my Dd would only pull herself up. Then one day just before her first birthday when we were at a story time session at the library she just picked up a soft toy from the other side of the room and walked to give it to me, I think I may have squealed in excitement in front of everyone Blush as an aside she only ever rolled over once too.

@Letsallscreamatthesistene The fact that he will only bear weight for a few seconds!

The V Tech activity table is good, usually people are selling them on second hand for cheap, although for the amount of use ours got, it would have been worth it new. I wouldn't say as a tool neccessarily just for encouraging standing, but it seems to be enjoyable enough and often has the unintended consequence of encouraging them.

Oh yes, a pouffe could work - maybe I will get one.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I just can't see how he will get there without some sort of practice TBH.

DS1 hates to weight bear, he’d deliberately lift his feet up or sit down. Suddenly he went from using a push along Walker to taking his first steps within a week, when he was 13 months old. Suddenly decided he was ready and progressed really fast. I’d leave him to it and not panic, although a push along Walker is a good suggestion.

DappledThings · 11/02/2021 15:34

My second wouldn't bear weight at all till she was well past a year. Nothing wrong and we didn't do anything to try to force it.

She didn't walk till she was 21 months but she was just taking her time. Now 3 and running and jumping and climbing everywhere just as she should be.

I really wouldn't worry at 10 months at all.

SnuggyBuggy · 11/02/2021 15:36

I wouldn't worry at 10 months but agree a push along walker or a pouffe would be OK.

ethelredonagoodday · 11/02/2021 19:45

My second, who is now nearly 8, didn't stand, babble, even crawl until he was 15 months. Was just starting to worry and then suddenly it was like a switch flicked. He hasn't stopped since and is constantly on the go. They do it when they're ready.

happymummy12345 · 11/02/2021 19:49

My son didn't stand up until he was over a year old. He only started crawling at 9 and a half months.
I wouldn't worry yet

NewMum0305 · 11/02/2021 19:51

Activity tables are good but seems a bit early to worry x

EmbarrassingMama · 11/02/2021 19:53

Google it and see what an Osteopath would say. It really isn’t recommended to push kids to walk before they’re ready. The HV sounds daft.

firstimemamma · 11/02/2021 19:57

Don't worry op. It doesn't matter. Relax and enjoy your child. Thanks

My child at 10 months was quite happy to sit and watch the world go by. Walked at 18 months and now at 2.5 doesn't stop running around! Very into everything and energetic. Looking at him now you'd have no clue when he first stood, walked or anything.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/02/2021 20:22

Millions of years of evolution? Grin

Most babies don't have walkers, pouffes, sofas or coffee tables and they almost all learn. Relax and enjoy it. Once they get up and going, they don't stop!

knitting774 · 12/02/2021 09:46

Well... that is true! Blush
