Has anyone's baby been unable to take a dummy?

He first had one at 1-2 weeks old and he latched onto it just fine and sucked away and loved it. Now he's 8 weeks and I've tried to use it again as he's quite refluxy however it's like he doesn't know what to do or how to suck on it properly, he seems to want it but just kind of moves it around his mouth and tries to suck but won't get that 'latch' onto it.

Other info: 80% tongue tie cut at 6 weeks. No difference since then
Breastfed with formula through a supplementary nursing system as I can't make enough milk for him

Tried MAM, Nuk dummies silicone dummies. Have latex Nuk and Nanobebe on order to try.

His reflux seems to be getting worse and he's always loved to suck since he was born, so I do wish he'd take one to help his reflux, I just can't work out why it seemed to work when he was little but the last few weeks he can't get the hang of it.

I found with mine that when the dummy is in their mouth but they aren't actually sucking on it, if you slowly start to remove it, they then start sucking on it.

Maybe he just doesn’t want it?

I tried dummies with two of mine & neither wanted it really. They would suck it briefly but it didn’t help & would soon be discarded.

Not all babies seem to like them.

Mine hated it, and repeatedly spat it out for weeks until I gave up. He just wasn't a dummy baby. Some aren't.

Could he have teething pain?

My DS started drooling like crazy about that age & struggling with his teeth.

When he's having teething pains he likes to chew on his dummy. Could be why he seems to want it but be moving it about.

Grapesoda7 · 08/02/2021 18:21

Two of mine wouldn't have a dummy, they wouldn't have expressed milk through a bottle either. I think they just didn't like plastic in their mouth. My daughter started sucking her thumb as a little baby and my son started sucking his fingers

The only dummy my DD would take was these Philips Avent soothies. They gave her one like this when she was in the neonatal unit and she wouldn’t take any other one (and I tried them all!).

Mine isn’t massively into his dummy, but even he does want it, he can’t keep it in. He sucks, it falls out within 30-60 seconds, he cries, I put it back in, repeat. He’s not spitting it out (it’s obvious when he does that as it’s a deliberate eject and goes flying and he doesn’t want it anymore), it’s just constantly falling out. So frustrating, will probably ditch it soon, already limiting use as it’s just not working for us.

Both my breastfed babies refused dummies. We tried harder with the second but she still didn't take to it.

You say reflux is getting worse. Have you considered whether CMPA might be an issue? Any other symptoms?

I tried one too to help with reflux but my baby has never taken to them. It’s annoying because I do think it would help if he would give it a go!

AubergineDream · 08/02/2021 21:17

One of my kids hated dummies. Literally spat it out would not have it, the other two have been obsessed.

Keha · 08/02/2021 22:03

Mine never took one, I don't think it's unusual.

Whistle73 · 08/02/2021 22:07

Mine would only have the ones with cherry-shaped teats - not the flat ones that are better for teeth. So not good in the long run but ok short term if desperate!

Sheleg · 09/02/2021 09:18

I've tried dummies with my DD about four times since she was born - she's 5 months now. She just doesn't want it. She sucks her thumb instead (which I do too, aged 40 Blush)

addler · 09/02/2021 10:17

It's just that he used to take it fine and now seems to still want it but can't rather than won't that's unusual for me.

GP has prescribed gaviscon to try so will see if that helps!

Some babies just don't like them. At first they don't really know what's in their mouth so suck anything. Now he'll be more used to you and doesn't like the dummy (on a side note does he take a bottle?)

My eldest loved his dummy and was happy to go between breast and bottle.

My youngest despised bottles and dummies. She is a thumb sucker though. She's just always preferred more 'natural' textures.

addler · 09/02/2021 11:54

Again he used to take a bottle when we first had problems with my milk not coming in, but since he's been a week or two old he's only used a supplementary nursing system while he breastfeeds (a very thin tube) to get the formula he needs instead of a bottle. A few days ago I tried a bottle again as he's started getting very upset and coming off the breast while feeding, even though I could tell he was still hungry, and he refused that too

Sometimes a TT can reattach, might be worth getting it check to rule it out.

Also my reflux baby sometimes refuses the breast (despite being hungry) and I think it might be linked to the reflux.
