Toilet/Potty Training

Talk to me about the differences.

DC 2 is 2.5yrs and as far as I am concerned not ready for either yet.

But there is a lot of pressure from a Mum's group I'm part of.

Several friends with older children have said though that they never potty trained and went straight to the toilet later....they all have children the same age so I'm wondering if it was fashionable at that point.

Seems very sensible to me, I just can't see the point in a potty, I mean why, why add in something makes your life harder for a short period which you then have to wean them off and train them again on something else at a later date. Why not just cut to the chase.

I've been treated disparagingly for thinking like this though. One of the ladies was saying well what you need to do is have a potty in every room like we did?!? WTAF, why would anyone want an open latrine in every room in their house - revolting.

I wanted to hear from people who have older children who have done it. So why are people so obsessed with the potty and why wouldn't you just wait a little and go straight to the toilet?

Thanks

We had a potty because we don't have a downstairs toilet and I was pregnant at the time (and knew I was having a section). You don't get long when you first start training and it was much easier to grab the potty than grab over 2 stone of toddler and run upstairs with her praying that DH wasn't in the bathroom!

We've had absolutely no problem moving to a toilet from the potty.

I think you are overthinking it.

You're not teaching the DC to use a potty and then teaching them to use a toilet. You are teaching them to signal when they need to do a wee/poo and not do it in their underwear but so no it in an appropriate receptacle - be that potty or toilet.

I used a potty downstairs as didn't have a downstairs loo at the time. My kids worked well between the two.

Also, be aware, it's hard to learn to poo probably with your legs hanging from a normal height toilet. So you'll need a stool to rest feet on too.

*so no it = do it

  • poo properly!

Gah was attempting to do three things at once!!

We have a downstairs toilet and a 2 upstairs so no problem with the amount of toilets here.

Interesting about pooing, aren't we all ideally supposed to poo with our knees further up, will keep that in mind.

All children learn to potty train at different ages,

Dd1- 3.5 years
Dd2 - 24 mths
DD3 - 26mths
Dd4 - 22mths

Some children are ready early, others later! Younger siblings seem to get there quicker as they copy older siblings!

Mine were 2 and 9 months
Both used potty for about a week then started using the toilet

I tend to think ready once dry during naps and can communicate. I don’t really think people should wait beyond 3 (an unpopular opinion on MN I know!)

My twins have just learnt. We had the potty in the living room to start with and then on day 3(?) moved the potty to the bathroom and they started using the toilet from then. We’ve got rid of the potties but they were very helpful in the beginning as you’re watching for toilet cues and don’t want to be going back and forth to the toilet endlessly (we did a sticker chart and on day two they’d done 23 tiny wees between them on the potty!)

Pinkbottle · 08/02/2021 17:41

Oh and they’re 3

We have one toilet upstairs with a seat on it as well as a potty for downstairs. DS 3yo uses both without issue. If there was no potty he'd happily use the toilet and vice versa. Don't listen to the pressure of this mum group and do whatever you feel comfortable doing for your child when you feel they're ready.
