Nappy rash Hell Advice please!!!!

I went to hell and back with my newborn baby's nappy rash and it almost caused a major fallout with my dh. Nothing worse when your in a rage to be told to calm down!

Doctor and health visitor was totally at a loss and considering their years of experience with this I was aghast at their head scratching.

They did offer advice - sudocreme, metanium, nappy free time etc. but matters just got worse and rash went from minor to severe bleeding and raw skin. At one point I was hysterical. Poor baby suffered for three weeks.

It was by pure luck that I stumbled on tiny troubles healing salve when I was frantically searching for a solution. Someone else had recommended it on another forum. It was amazing and healed the horrendous rash after three or four days of using at each nappy change. I also aired his bottom more often.

Has anyone else been to hell and back with this and if so I would love to hear how you coped and what worked for you. This post is intended to help others in a similar situation and to provide some much needed support.

I’m very wary of products containing essential oils for babies so I’m not sure that would be right for me.

I use cloth nappies on my baby and have never had nappy rash - I think because the nappies are so soft and absorbent. It might be worth seeing if you can borrow some from a library to see if that helps?

Poor wee thing☹️. It sounds like you've tried everything that I would have suggested.
I used to work in a baby unit of a nursery and one little girl had the worse nappy rash I had ever seen. I used to feel so awful changing her because it was obviously painful, wee mite. What helped her was Sudocrem plastered thick and we changed her roughly every 1.5 to 2 hours to keep her dry. We cleaned her with cotton wool and water, no wipes.
I hope you find something that works.

Ds2 had awful nappy rash as a new born, bleeding, raw and so painful. We tried everything but the drs gave us a low steroid cream which cleared it up in days and hasn't been a problem since.

Weleda cream with yellow metanium on top worked for us. It’s like magic

Mumof1andacat · 05/02/2021 18:33

Drapolene cream. Available from Amazon and most independent chemists. Saved us a few times

We also use reusable nappies and just water on flannels. I think all the chemicals in wipes, lotions and potions often cause more issues than none being used at all

gratitutesmynewgratitute · 05/02/2021 22:38

Personally I've always found drying them with cotton wool helps and I've always used either cotton wool and warm water or water wipes ( the copies contain more chemicals.) We did have a sore few weeks, around a green poo stage ( breast fed baby) and I used sudocreme as a barrier, really thick. Baths everyday seemed to help and changing them instantly when they poo.

Thanks for all of the helpful comments! Changing baby regularly seems to be a recurrent recommendation that works.

Good advice about the old fashioned Terry's nappies and re-usables. Could be a bit of work though with all the washing but then again if it stops nappy rash and the trauma that can ensue it would be well worth it. Thankfully the rash is now all cleared away thanks to the salve.

Your right to be wary when using anything that makes you feel uncomfortable on your baby (no point causing yourself anxiety) but this nappy salve was very gentle and natural. I researched before using it as I wouldn't just put anything on my baby and the essential oils such as chamomile are used in a lot of baby products and are very safe and healing. As soon as I smelled it I new it was safe.

Like Caspianberg I am more worried about fragrances and the synthetic chemicals tbh.

Aww I'm glad it's cleared up, it's just so awful to see your wee one in distress at changing time and it can look so angry!

katieg03 · 08/02/2021 22:04

Both my boys only got nappy rash once or twice each. I used metanium. But rarely used wipes. I'm sure you can actually be prescribed thrush cream for a really bad nappy infection. My nephew was really bad for getting it. Also, sounds stupid but years ago you used to use an egg white to put a barrier on the skin, Google it for correct instructions 🤣

AbsolCatly · 08/02/2021 22:15

Whipped egg whites worked for DD, applied then allowed to dry before putting nappy on and didn't affect the nappy absorbency

LifeIsBusy · 08/02/2021 22:18

We always planned on using reuseables for our LO but initially used disposibles until he reached the minimum weight on the birth to potty nappies and we had horrendous nappy rash from the start. A health visitor (not our regular one) suggested it was the reuseables but turns out it was the disposibles. After we eventually got it cleared up which took a month we switched to cloth full time and everytime we put him back in disposables his bum would break out to bleeding point unless he had a thick layer of metanium. We tried different brands but the same thing happened every time.

TheMildManneredMilitant · 08/02/2021 22:19

Actually my ds' rash turned out to be fungal and a prescription of canestan cream sorted it out very quickly. Just worth flagging as a possibility if other remedies aren't working.

timeforanother1 · 08/02/2021 22:39

Before a baby I was always lead to believe nappy rash was from not changing nappies enough/ correctly- HOW WRONG THIS IS!

Mine would always get awful nappy rash when teething. Almost like the poo was acidic and if I'd not seen for myself I wouldn't have believed how poo against her skin for about 3 minutes could cause such a sore.

After Drs prescriptions/ lots of professionals advice what worked the best for us was cotton wool and water for every change (even when no rash).
Yellow metanium on first and white metanium over the top when bedtime/ going out. Other than that when it was bad- no nappy. Just a towel on my lap when feeding etc so as soon as wee/ poo comes it's moved instantly as in our case just minutes made sores.
Bit of a faff when I had dc alone but it worked so was worth it.

giantwaterbottle · 08/02/2021 22:52

Used yellow metanium on both mine and it cleared it up.
Also lots of no happy time, before bath every evening and I go with prevention is better than the cure, so whenever they looked even a little red I would apply sudocream or similar as a barrier.

Did I just dream it or was this thread closed for a bit?

Fatas · 10/02/2021 22:56

My toddler had nappy rash from newborn. It didn’t bleed but seeing his little bum cheeks all red stresses me out no end. What worked best for us was lots of nappy off time and bepanthen. He was changed 10/12 times a day and I b fed so he poohed no end. Even tho I whipped nappy off as soon as poss it irritated as soon as there was any contact with pooh.

At about 3 months it got a lot better and would only get a bit red every now and then. I think some babies just have sensitive skin.

I read a lot a lot of posts and had a lot of advice. What I found what works for one baby does not work not work for another. Sudocrem and metanium we’re useless for us, but worked wonders for others.
