Reusable training pants - good, bad (definitely ugly though)?

Have read they are a bad idea but I wonder with ds if they would be good as he has in the past got quite upset when there has been an accident eg. pre-bath.
I bought a pair of Bambino Mio resusable training pants yesterday....they seem like he'd feel wetness but contain some of it so he wouldn't get too upset....any views?

We can see this thread is very old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for guidance, we’ve recently updated our best potty training pants page with plenty of great options rated by Mumsnet parents, plus info on whether they’re right for you. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

bump -anyone. Are training pants really so bad?

No, we use the Bright Bots pants which are similar to the BM ones, only they are coloured. I tend to put them on ds2 when we go out on a shopping trip or day out, basically anywhere where I think I might not be able to find a toilet quickly. DS2 still treats them like normal pants though.

I figured we could use them like that - when out and when first starting training without nappies.....

I just think sticking him straight in pants means accidents that will upset him and put him off the whole potty training process....knowing him.....he would just have a couple of accidents and then think 'nappies are better cos I don't do the wrong thing' - even if I tell him a thousand times that an accident isn't a problem/ doesn't matter I know he will think it is as he doesn't like dirt/ spillages etc/.

Yes we used the Bright Bots and Bambino Mio ones.
They still get wet in them but stops that total flooding you get without. Good for dribbles really, not full blown wees.

We occasional use trainer pants outside the house, we use Bright Bot Trainer pants and one wet pants from here. BTW you can get custom real small pants from her too...my DD has pink pants with Piglet on the front, her lovey

Wwe have started using a tip I read on this board (can't remember who suggested it) by placing a fairy hammock between the baby and her normal pants...acts the same as trainer pants for a small miss.

Hi
Tried the Bambino Mios but they are massive around ds's skinny legs with big gaps so I don't think they're going to work for us even in the smallest size.
Problem is that even though he is 2.4, he only weighs just under 25lb and most reusable training pants seem to start bigger than that....

Sorry to be totally stupid but what's a fairy hammock?

A 'fairy hammock' is a cloth pad ladies use instead of a disposable liner for periods. I had a couple of brand new ones I have reassigned to the nappy bag.

The bright bots run very small, my DD started wearing the size 'small' when she was 5 months old and moved into size 'medium' at a year.

But if you are worried try the link I gave you in the last post, which is to a lady who sews made to measure trainer pants and real underwear and is happy to ship to England for a reasonable charge (can't remember but it was very cheap.

Good Luck

I saw some gorgeous-looking training pants on the blueberries site; I'll find a link

Thanks Sazisi I'll take a look. Ds keeps asking for his training pants but I can't let him wear them as they are so baggy they'd be pointless!

ooh they look fab - and I love the way they list thigh sizes so I can check whether they really will fit ds's slim ones (doesn't take after his mum there!)

bright bots are fab, and the only ones I have ever found to fit my smaller than average dd.

boo64 · 06/11/2007 22:17

Do you reckon the smallest size (quoted as 14kg but the website says they come up small) would fit my ds who is less than that 26lbs (less than 12kg)?

I'm really struggling to find any small enough - he's 2.4 and not that little for his age, maybe 25th percentile, so I don't understand why they are all so big.
I don't want to buy more on the off chance and then find they are uselessly big like the Bambino Mio ones.

Might be worth buying some 2nd hand ones to try, they usually shrink when washed anyway as only meant to be washed on cool.
