What age did you take children out of the cot?

My mum out us into toddler beds at 18 months. I also know a couple of women who have put their children into toddler beds since they were about 8 months.

I’ve been thinking about switching DD 13 months, to a bed and now we’ve been given the opportunity of a single bed by a family member.

If you have moved your children into a bed at this age have you any tips or tricks? We’ve already got a stair gate on her room.

I’m mainly concerned she’s going to get out of bed and start plying on her soft play or getting toys out but we can work around this and out toys away if it does happen.

I’m just wondering what the best way to go about it and make sure she’s safe, maybe a full length bed guard on the wall side and a shorter one on the other side. - the bed were getting is floor level so I’m not concerned about her falling out and hurting herself.

Eldest was 16 months, decided that was far too early... youngest was 22 months!

Everyone saying leave them in there as long as poss - what about potty training don’t they need the sides off incase they need to use the potty in the night ? Mines still in the cot & I was going to start soon sorry if I sound dumb.
Mine went straight from pull ups to dry at night. I just left them wearing pull ups until they woke dry for a week, then stopped using them. It was completely separate to day time potty training, because it's subconscious.

OP I would lower the cot sides and deal with the minor inconvenience of being too short for a while.

2.5 but only because I needed the cot for my then 3 month old. Gosh I would keep them in the cot as long as poss 🤣. Saying that we would have been forced to change to bed at 2 years and 9 months as once he was potty trained he insisted he didn’t want to wee at night either. This means he sometimes sleeps through, but more often than not wakes us in the night for a wee. 😩

@smoothchange think it dependa in the baby/toddler- many will continue to wee in their nappy/pull up at night- some won’t.

When they could climb out by themselves.

At just over two, the side of the cot came off for both of mine and it became at cot bed. They both went into full size single beds at 3 - DD1 with a bed guard as her bed is quite high .

Neither of them is inclined to wander. In fact, age 7, DD2 will still shout at me to come and comfort her after a bad dream. Wakes me up with such a fright - I'd rather she came and told me!

Around 18 months, they started climbing out and it became dangerous.

mootymoo · 02/02/2021 23:29

About 15 months for dd1 because she climbed out, about 13 months for dd2 because we had been offered a free single bed for dd1 and there wasn't room for the cot and toddler bed as well in their bedroom (and she rarely stay in the cot past midnight anyway.)

stormelf · 02/02/2021 23:32

22 months for dd, I was pregnant and wanted to get her used to the idea of a bed before her brother arrived 4 months later. She sleeps on an ikea extendable bed which is toddler size at the moment and quite low to the ground. She's never fallen out.
Ds is 13 months and I'll be leaving him in the cot as long as possible

DD1 - nearly 3 because we were selling the house & her room looked bigger with a cot instead of a bed.
DS 18 months because he fell climbing out and concussed himself so we figured a bed was less height to fall from and probably safer.
DD2 - I think around 2
