Being able to sit, should I worry

Hi,

My LB is just about to turn 9 months and he still cannot sit unaided. He will either push back or just flop and get onto his belly.
We work daily with floor time but he's just not interested and I'm starting to worry.

Please tell me what to do 🙈 I have spoken with the HV and all she said was keep trying, but we are due an appointment in 5 weeks time

Can he roll or crawl?

RandomMess · 29/01/2021 17:12

One of mine didn't sit unaided until 11 months.

Do you have any other concerns at all?

Scaredmumma8 · 29/01/2021 17:13

He can roll and literally rolls to everything. I would say he's trying to crawl but his legs just go wild and he gets nowhere

If he's rolling and trying to crawl I'd say that you don't have much to worry about.

I'd wait for the appointment with your HV, he may surprise you and start sitting by then.

In the meantime, there are some tips here on getting him to sit.

Can he bear weight on his legs yet, so stand up if you're holding his hands?

Scaredmumma8 · 29/01/2021 17:21

Not really interested in bearing weight on his legs, he'll stand upright in a jumperoo but if I hold him he just won't bother.
I am torn between worried and saying he's damn lazy! He bangs his legs so hard so he's definitely strong. In his bouncer he gets across the room if we put him in it 😂

I feel like I am lost and because he's my first, in this lockdown situation I'm literally fending for myself

Oh I think he is just much more interested in rolling!! Why sit still if you can move to where you want 😂

Scaredmumma8 · 29/01/2021 17:36

It's almost like he does exactly that. He knows rolling works so why try anything else lol

I would only travel on my butt and so did DD. I’d covered my parents entire downstairs in my bouncer. Try not to worry.

loopyapp · 29/01/2021 18:21

Stop using thr jumperoo and other sitting aides.

He hasnt had to tone those areas of muscle because hes being propped up in a sitting position. I'll wager he will be sitting independently after a week or two of no aides.

Your little boy sounds fine! Don't worry, they all do things at different times and some never crawl, they 'bottom travel'.

Chubbier babies (and there's nothing wrong with chubby), take longer to sit and walk than lighter ones.

bloodywhitecat · 29/01/2021 18:32

Do you use a Bumbo or similar? If you do I would stop as they can slow physical progress.

Scaredmumma8 · 29/01/2021 19:06

He hasn't been in the jumperoo more than a week and I stopped using it, used a sitting aid seat once or twice a month if that. He's literally on the floor or in his bouncer chair if he's getting tired.
I have spent the last week on the floor with him and hes not interested, trying again this week too

Oh this could be my 10 month old! He really didn't sit confidently until just over 9 months and was still regularly toppling over backwards 2 weeks ago, but has massively improved in the last couple of weeks. He is still not crawling despite looking like he was making attempts at about 6 months and also has crazy crazy active legs, he's like a frog and always has been since pregnancy. He was an early roller and now rolls to get himself around the house. I'm also a first time mum so was becoming worried, especially as friends' much younger babies have started to crawl but the health visitors aren't and won't even give us an appointment... We've also never used a bumbo and very rarely use the jumperoo and he's had a lot of tummy time. The only explanation I can think of is that he is very long but also pretty light/slim so simply finds it more efficient to roll than lift his body from the ground but who knows... He's on track for all other areas of development and has really good attention and social skills so I'm becoming more relaxed now but I think in normal times we'd have probably met someone at a playgroup who had a similar thing with their child and it would just be that much more reassuring... It definitely doesn't sound like anything you're doing or not doing!

You have described him to a T here, he's tall but slim, mad crazy legs when on his front like the breast Stoke but 10x faster lol. He's a lazy git tbh, won't hold his bottle because mum or dad does so why should he. If I give him normal food he'd rather just open his mouth 🙈 I do make him take it but this just shows how lazy he can be.

I am going to continue with floor time more than anything and see what happens

Just give him plenty of floor time and don’t always sit with him. Both my girls crawled long before they could sit.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 29/01/2021 22:27

DS1 didn't sit unaided reliably until 11 months and didn't crawl until 14 months.

I was beside myself with worry. He finally walked at 18 months.

DS2 sat and crawled very early. Then didn't walk until 19 months.

They are now adults and no one gives a toss over when they sat/crawled/walked.
