How bad can teething get?

My DD (13 months) has had a fever and been really unwell for about 4 days now. She’s not eating and usually had a huge appetite..I can get some fruit purée down her but that’s it. Barely drink any milk but is drinking water fortunately. She doesn’t want to play at all just wants to cuddle and the only thing that stops her crying almost all day is cartoons.

It might all be normal but I’ve never seen her this unwell before..she’s also awake maybe every 15 mins in the night crying and just exhausted..I’m cosleeping and she’s still so upset even with me hugging her. Nurofen or calpol don’t seem to be making much of a difference to the pain but do bring the fever down..wbuch has been up to 39.

I took her to the docs 2 days ago and they said nothing serious and likely just teething but this seems to extreme for teething? Just really worried! Her nursery has been closed with Covid so we’ve been keeping her off but that was 2 weeks ago..don’t know where she’d have picked up a virus or cold as we haven’t mixed with anyone and both work from work.

Sorry typos, writing with one hand while she sleeps on me!

This is not teething.

floorplanner · 29/01/2021 11:51

Honestly get her checked again. Could be covid or something like tonsillitis or even a uti.

Floorplanner beat me to it! Not teething. The evidence base says that teething does not cause a temperature.

Thatwentbadly · 29/01/2021 12:17

Definitely not teething. She will need a covid test. How high is her temp? You may need to ring the HV for advice.

Thatwentbadly · 29/01/2021 12:17

I meant GP not HV.

Richardwilson84 · 29/01/2021 13:31

My little boy is 15 months and having the same issues (bar crying in the night, thankfully). I’ve just been monitoring temp, giving calpol and keep trying him with food.

Sorry can’t offer much more help but it isn’t just you ☺️

Vicky1989x · 29/01/2021 13:36

My 9 month old has similar symptoms a few weeks ago and I thought it was teething too but I had tested positive for Covid at the same time and since no teeth came in, pretty sure she had it as well.

I’d get her tested just to rule it out if anything!

User0ne · 29/01/2021 14:44

I think that's too long for teething.

My experience with teething (2 DC) is you'd see an improvement during the day (except mealtimes) and a temperature would not be constant/present to the degree you're describing. I'd also expect to see a switch to milk guzzling.

My anecdotal test of whether one of my children is actually ill/hurt is whether it can be fixed/improved with a haribo or custard cream. If your daughter is rejecting her (very) favourite food then she's probably quite ill and not just teething.

Thanks everyone just waiting on a call back from our GP..when she woke up from her nap she had a fever of 39.9 looks really poorly :( it’s come down now to 39.4 I’m surprised they didn’t suggest Covid test when I took her before. Bloody horrible then being ill :(

floorplanner · 29/01/2021 20:08

Poor thing, did the GP call you back this evening? I'm sure you're keeping up the calpol and fluid as much as possible. Hope you get some answers soon.

tbtf · 29/01/2021 20:10

Book the COVID test yourself, high temperature is a symptom, you don't need the GP to suggest it.

Ella0909 · 29/01/2021 21:02

The GP did call back and said to take her to children’s a&e..they’ve asked me to try and get fluid down her with syringe at the hospital but she’s overtired and hysterical And they don’t have a room so just sat in a reception chair. Husband and me rotating shifts as only one parent allowed at a time..hopefully just a bug :( think we’re gonna be here hours and she’s so exhausted just feel like it’s making it worse

Thanks
floorplanner · 29/01/2021 21:23

So sorry op

If there is a vending machine there look for a carton of juice, even if it's sweet shite, the little straw can be intriguing for them and something different than a syringe. Or maybe the parent not minding dd could go get one.

It's really awful being in your position, I hope you get seen soon.

They let us go home to get urine test but then we came back as she seemed so poorly..been in all day and she isn’t drinking any water or milk and won’t eat anything..all I can get her to eat is watermelon. She’s had horrible watery explosive poo and they’re testing her blood for infection...I think they’ll end up having to put IV I’m surprised they haven’t already. They don’t seem concerned which is reassuring I suppose but feel terrified she’s just getting worse everyday and she’s lot worse much liquid with 8 poos today and not drunk a drop :(

Poor little mite it really is so awful when little ones are unwell. It sounds as though you're in the right place and I really do hope she starts to feel brighter soon. Handhold from me OP 💐
Thatwentbadly · 30/01/2021 18:20

You poor things. You definitely did the right thing in going back.

floorplanner · 30/01/2021 19:55

Oh I'm so sorry.

I'm so glad you're staying in but OP can I just say don't be afraid to push them a little if you feel she's really going downhill and the full extent hasn't been picked up yet. I'm sure by now they have her on a drip - fingers crossed.

Ella0909 · 30/01/2021 22:29

Now on ward after 10 hours in a&e and poor baby getting more and more stressed and exhausted..she’s on iV antibiotics they think it’s probably uti but have to wait for the culture. Can’t sleep as sick with worry and she won’t take any fluids at all but strangely her blood test revealed she wasn’t dehydrated...watermelon must be helping as that’s all she’s eating. I think I got off easy with the birth and no complications but can see how horric and heartbreaking it is to have baby so unwell :(

OP posts:
CatandBaby · 31/01/2021 00:25

Oh crikey op that sounds horrible. Sending hugs and good wishes to you and baby x

floorplanner · 31/01/2021 09:08

You're right, having a sick baby is the absolute worst. I really hope she picks up soon. I'm sure you both are exhausted.
Well done for getting the watermelon into her op. Fingers crossed she managed to sleep for a while once on the ward.

Caneloalvarez · 31/01/2021 21:02

@Ella0909 Just wanted to say I saw your post yesterday, I hope your little girl is feeling better, what a stressful time. I hope they've figured out what's wrong and she's on the mend!
