Help - need cotton nappy advice please!

Hi!

I've got myself into a bit of a muddle about cotton nappies so i'd appreciate a bit of advice please!

Before my little boy was born 3 weeks ago I bought some terry nappies, liners and a few wraps. I also bought 4 fluffles to try and a couple of modern baby (?) nappies and wraps. I've found that I don't get on very well with the terries as they are HUGE on my son! He can't bend his legs properly when they are on! I love the fluffles so am tempted to buy a few more but he seems to be a heavy wetter and they are always soaked through when I change him, even when I use the booster. I change him about every 2 1/2 - 3 hours - should I be changing him more often to get round this?

I'd rather buy nappies that will last til he's quite a bit older as we are on a really tight budget. I'm happy to buy second hand.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions for the perfect nappy for my boy I'd love to hear them.

Thanks for your help!

I used to change mine every 2 hours. Terries are great once the baby is a bit bigger and they are good for night as they don't have to walk.

curlywurlycremeegg · 30/10/2007 14:44

What size terries did you get? I tend to find the 40cm square ones best for a newborn. As for new nappies. if he is a haevy wetter and you have good drying facilities I would go for the bambinex bamboo size two nippa nappy. You can use it from newborn with the front folded down and they will last you well past the 35lb mark

goingfor3 · 30/10/2007 14:46

New babies need to be changed at least every two hours, you will need to change less as he gets older.

I never used terries so I can´t help there. As a newborn nappy I used bimbles but they didn´t last too long (10 weeks?). I have some size 1 nappies to sell if you are interested you could try out a few fairly cheaply? I barely used them as preferred my bimbles so they are in fantastic condition. I have a sandy´s, tots bamboozle, diddy diapers (x6!) and a couple of wambamboos in size 1.

All of these would last I guess til he is 16lbs? So maybe as long as 6 months depending on your baby.

If you want bigger, I used size 2 wambamboos (bambinex) from 4 months and they were big on him but ok. he´s 6months now and they are starting to look like they fit him a bit more. Loads of people say you can use these from birth but they would have swamped my ds. If you think pockets might work for you bumgenius are birth to potty and are supposed to be great and are from 10lbs. I´ve not used them though. I use wonderoos, they are also birth to potty pocket and I´ll definitely use them on the next baby from birth, they are fab!

aaah, will change him more often then. what about nights? he goes about 4 hr between feeds and i'd rather not wake him up to change him more frequently. feel like a bad mummy now for not changing him enough :-(

i bought the 60cm terries as i was told they would be fine for newborn but he's got thin thighs so they're not ideal - good idea to use them at night though!

off to investigate all nappies mentioned! keep the advice coming!

MM - how much are you looking for for your nappies?

tbh I just want rid of them now. maybe 4 for the sandy´s (7.25 new) 6 for tots (9 new), and 3.50 each of the diddys (4.99 new)? (or 20 quid all 6?).

FlameInHell · 31/10/2007 12:15

You all really change newborns every 2 hours!?

I love the bambinex with a nippa too

mistlethrush · 31/10/2007 12:21

I ended up with prefolds most of the time when ds small, with shaped for going out (marginally safer!), as this was the cheapest way of being able to change him regularly and dry things easily - found they dried quicker than shaped. Got Totsbots size 2 at 6 months as he was going to nursery (relatively straightfoward to put on - normally came home with them fairly OK!) and still supplemented with prefolds. By this stage we had discovered Nature Babies wraps that were fantastic over prefolds and shaped and minimised leaks. Tots bots size 2 lasted him through to potty training. But yes, changed approx every 2 hrs or more often when required early on.

laundrylover · 31/10/2007 12:31

OMG I never changed every two hours! Also I never changed them in the night unless they'd poo-ed. Why wake them up if they'll feed and go back to sleep?

Boost, boost, boost!

mistlethrush · 31/10/2007 12:35

I didn't change at night either - only during the day when production copious!

ziggyf · 02/11/2007 14:20

That's nice to know laundrylover, I was feeling like a really bad mummy! I've started changing him every two hours but he's still wet through in that short amount of time. Any ideas of what I can use as a booster?

I do tend to change him at night but I've got him in disposables at night at the moment as the cotton ones get so wet in the 3-4 hours between his feeds. Going to try the super bamboo nappies that were suggested by curlywurly.

MM - sorry to not get back to you, have been without internet for a few days. How much for your wambamboos? I think they are the same type as curlywurly suggested earlier but under a different name aren't they?

Really appreciate the advice. You can tell I'm a new mum and a complete novice! Must buy some parenting books to master the basics......

Terries should work if the baby is at least 6 lbs and you know the right folds...

lailasmum · 02/11/2007 14:26

I think fluffles in the size one don't seem quite as super absorbent in the as some of the cotton alternatives. Maybe try the size 2.

ziggyf · 02/11/2007 15:46

lljkk - they just look HUGE on him and he can't bend his body properly or his legs! He is a bit of a skinny minny on his legs although his belly is getting chubby :-) I've tried the kite fold (which is great when I use muslins although these are almost too small now) and the Jo fold. Any other folds I can try?

lailasmum - i've tried boosting the size 1 fluffle today with the booster they came with but it doesn't seem to have made any difference so maybe the size 2 is worth a go.

thanks x

Bat fold is fab [hgrin]

I've never been as excited by microfibre as everyone says - maybe it is because it doesn't feel heavy, but I just can't get my head round it

FlameFromBonfire · 02/11/2007 16:10

Aww festive smilies gone

ziggyf · 02/11/2007 16:22

ooh what's the bat fold?

initially went for the fluffles as i didn't have a tumble dryer but we've since been given one and it's a godsend! Still dry the fluffles on the radiator though so the microfibre is good in that sense. I also like the fluffy feel of them and the fact that they are easy to get on - but I guess other cotton nappies would be just as easy to get on?
